Dawn Question regarding "New Yorkers"

Now, don't take offense, I am a New Yorker but, currently living in California. My husband and I are thinking about a Spring cruise with my parents who are still in NY and his parents who are from California. Most of the reveiws I have read about the Dawn are very positive, especially about the restaruants, and good food is important to us (and we don't mind the surcharges)...the negative reviews almost always seem to include a comment such as "ship was over-run with rude New Yorkers". We have cruised on Princess (love them), Carnival (liked them very much), Royal Caribbean (very disappointed with them), Crystal (top notch in our opinion) and Celebrity (love them). I have encountered rude passengers from all areas of the country, and, I'd really like to hear some opinions on the Dawn and the passengers she carries. Thanks.

I've often wondered this myself. I live in South Florida where the rudeness factor tends to be "New Yorker" x 10, but most people that cruise out of here are from elsewhere. I'd be curious to know what the percentage of cruisers out of NYC are from NYC/New Jersey area?

Shoreguy, you wouldn't happen to have those stats in your bag of tricks, would you? ;)

I've cruised out of New York on NCL twice (Dawn and Sea) with a Spirit cruise coming up in 6 weeks. There's definitely a Greater New York feel to the passenger mix (altho I can't give you percentages), but I haven't encountered any more passenger rudeness on my NY cruises than my other dozen or so cruises.

Too bad the old boards did not carry over. This was a very heated debate when the Dawn first came to NYC.

Most of the passengers on the Dawn in the winter are in fact from the North East. It makes sense why would you get on a plane to fly to NY in the winter. For those of us in the NE not having to fly in the dead of winter is what draws us to the Dawn and now the Spirit.

I am one of a few that has cruised the Dawn when it was homeported in Miami and NYC and in my opinion there is a big difference in the passenger mix. Is it better or worse. I am not going there. I want to live a little longer:D

I will say I have met 100s of wonderful people on the Dawn on my 5 cruises from NYC. I have seen the worst behavior by passengers as well. I have seen foul mouthed passengers reduce crew members to tears who were just trying to do there job. I have seen passengers hug crew members like long lost loved ones.

In general it appeared to me as a more diverse passenger mix which is good thing. There will be that special group that you will notice everywhere and not for good reasons. You may even hear them before you see them.

There will be far more passengers just enjoying their cruise like the rest of us.

The passenger make-up out of New York is very diverse drawing people from New Jersey, Pennsylvania, New England and even Canada as well as New York. In addition, you can't lump all New Yorkers as they are also diverse coming from the city, the suburbs and far upstate.

Finally, the passenger make-up will also greatly differ depending on time of year (school holidays), destination and length of cruise.

And some of us Brits too - a good excuse in our case to visit New York for the first time. :D

you will encounter rudeness everywhere you may travel-I've traveled the world-extensively-and there are "ugly AMERICANS" + ugly every other nationalities everywhere-except maybe the Balinese......

I've sailed the Dawn from FL and from NYC-and seen both-just hope that you can ignore the bad and appreciate the good!

Ditto swoosh and dolphins..... Its a northeastern mix... I haven't noticed anything expotentially worse than cruises out of florida.... That being said, If I was in California I would probably take a cruise out of Florida because they are , in general, better priced and the airfare is relatively cheaper. The jewel is the dawn+1

I notice that many of this thread's respondents are from the tri-state area...I'm curious to hear the opinions of Southerners, Westerners or Midwesterners who've sailed from both NY and Miami.

Hmmm, is it cheaper to fly to Miami than to New York from California? It's certainly a lot cheaper for us in Chicago to fly to NY (plus it takes half the time and we adore Manhattan--three good reasons for us to start sailing out of NY). I'd think LA-NYC or SF-NYC would be much more highly trafficked routes than LA-Miami or SF-Miami, which often makes for cheaper flying options.

I have sailed on the Dawn several times.

What immediately strikes you on the Dawn out of NY is the dearth of rude, inconsiderate smokers blowing smoke in public hallways and rooms, compared to cruises out of Florida, where the hallways were always smokey.

SFCruiser, As you can see below most of our cruises have been out of NY including the Dawn twice. All of our cruises, CCL, 'X', NCL, seem to have the same 'mix' of passengers, predominantly NY'ers and tristate.

I hope I don't step on too many toes, but the rudest passengers seemed to be when we went on the 10 day E. Car. on the Dawn in Feb, NOT winter recess, with the average age of the cruisers were over the age of 65. I thought these passengers were the most demanding and just plain rude to the crew. At one point, when I felt bad for a crew member being berated by a passsenger, I butted in and commented (PS- I'm a NYer too) which shut her up !

We also cruised during winter recess on the Dawn, and although overrun with kids, the cruise was great and our group of 5 couples (no kids) loved it.

I would suggest if you are not traveling with children to avoid school vacation times and summer. We did cruise on CCL Legend this year in May and 'X' Zenith when school was in session, and although they were mostly NYers the cruises were very pleasant and enjoyable. I'm sure the Dawn crowd during these times would be similar.

We're from California and we're taking the Dawn because it meshes well with a planned NY state visit, my sister will have a new spawn of about six weeks by then.

And, of course, we wanted to sail the Dawn :D

It is a major schlep, though. At least it won't be in the dead of winter.

Airfares run about the same LA-NY and LA-Miami, depending on the day of the week and all those silly factors..

The AVERAGE age was over 65? So there were a lot of people in their 80`s;)

Cruised in Feb. on the Dawn, a large mix of people and ages. If you are speaking about Senior Citizens........They are "special", aren`t they:rolleyes: ?

They don't call us "The Greatest Generation" for nothing.

Not necessarily rude, but certainly outrageous. Never saw so much gold & diamond jewelry & makeup & hairdos as we saw on the tender to Great Stirrup Cay! To the beach...imagine that... Ya gotta love NJ/NYers! :D

Oh Dahling......

Let me tell you about the Ladies Who Lunch......

They live in Beverly Hills, Bel Air, Brentwood and lunch, professionally, with a sideline in dinner parties and "functions". The hair is all the exact same blonde...

I have to chuckle at that. As a Midwesterner, I'd say that New Jersey-ites, Pennsylvanians, and New Englanders don't make for a diverse passenger mix! (Though I agree that New Yorkers can't be lumped together as a homogenous group.)

I've been on the Dawn twice, and once on the Rotterdam out of New York. (My shipmates live in Manhattan.) Those cruises out of New York were definitely full of people from the New York area - not surprisingly. It was not a geographically diverse group from my perspective. Were they more rude than passengers I've sailed with out of Florida? No, not really. Though I wouldn't describe New Yorkers as shy and retiring. ;)

I do remember a lot of dinner table conversation about topics of interest to New Yorkers - transportation (how they got to the pier) and real estate (how they found their apartment), but eventually they moved on to other subjects. :)

I love New York, and sailing past the NYC skyline and the Statue of Liberty and then under the Verrazano Narrows bridge is a real treat. I think everyone should try it at least once!

I'm a New Yorker and sailed on the Dawn last spring. My only other cruise was the year before on the HAL Oosterdam. We loved the "O" for many reasons but found the Dawn enjoyable as well. My observation of some of the passengers on the Dawn is this..many people enjoy carry on "loudspeaker" conversations. I don't know how else to put it without offending anyone. I find it rude. I don't know what part of NY anyone was from but we do have accents that distinguish us from the rest. However, I don't recall rudeness such as pushing and shoving to get to food or elevators or seats for a show, etc.

I would sail on the Dawn again.

I think New Yorkers, Jerseyites, Pennsylvanians and New Englanders would be very surprised to learn they are so much alike? I think you can find big differences among people in the same state (Brooklyn and Buffalo).

I'm from the midwest and I can tell you that we had the best time. There was no rudeness that people worry so much about. Everybody was there for a great vacation and it was one of the best.

In the lounge the CD took a poll and it was nearly all New York and New Jersey people. I especially liked playing Texas Holdem ...what a blast.

My issue on my Dawn cruise last week were the mannerisms of the Asian and Russian groups on board, more so the Asians. Rude would be the appropraite term, spitting in sinks in the public bathrooms, clearing their noses without tisssues and in general being pushy. I was amazed at what I saw.

The Russian groups were alot nicer but dam, why do they feel the need to go into the sauna, pour a bucket of water on the hot rocks and burn everyone out of the sauna all along, cramming 20 people into a sauna made for 6 at max.

The cruise was excellent and I can say I really enjoyed my time on the ship. The Northeast crowd is fun and like to party hard. This added to the fun on board and the casino sure had a good crowd in it all the time.

You may even find some Brits cruising out of New York. NCL UK are marketing the Dawn cruises, esp. the 7 day autumn cruises, as an 11-night/10-day package including 3 nights in NYC before the cruise. I won't say that you'll be overrun with us, but that's an attractive holiday at a good price, given that it includes the cruise, 3 nights pre-cruise stay in New York, and return flights & transfers.
