Roatan and Allure of the Seas, in Case You Wondered

If you're booked on Allure with a scheduled stop in Coxen Hole, Roatan, but wondered if it would happen in the wake of the damage the MSC ship did to the pier, have no fear. We're just back from the ship's W. Caribbean cruise and we made its maiden stop in Roatan. A section of the pier is submerged (it looks like no repairs have been attempted yet), but there's enough for the Allure to safely dock.

What's good about Roatan:

* The water around the pier is so clear that you can see fish right through it

* The pier complex is fun--there's a cigar roller, vendors of local coffee and chocolate, and a number of shops, music and even zip-lining

* The people are very friendly

What's challenging about Roatan:

* If you want to walk into town, know that the sidewalks are barely wide enough for two people to walk side by side. Factor in traffic that comes close to the sidewalk and caution becomes that much more important.

So can you shop and be on the beach at the same time. That's one of my gripes about Cozumel, you can't do both. Im hoping that the beach and shopping can be done at the same time, even if it's only from beach vendors.

What sort of shopping are you looking for and where have you been in Cozumel? Most beach clubs have some sort of souvenir area and there are always plenty of shops back at the piers.

Coxen Hole has no beach and a beach day requires a fairly lengthy and expensive taxi ride to most places. Many people go to West Bay, where there will be multiple beach vendors.

As C-legs mentioned you can go to West Bay where there are a few shops and the premier beach on the island

OR

You could go to the village of West End with heaps more shopping and Half Moon Bay Beach.

Thanks so much for letting us know. The original information I saw was that Allure wouldn't dock at Roatan for the rest of the season.

Good to hear that is not the case. Can't wait to visit.

Can you tell me about how long it takes to walk from the ship to the gates where the independent tour operators are? Our reservations tells us to take the first right as we leave the ship and continue to the Main Terminal, once at the gate our tour operator will be there. Just wondering how long of walk that is. When we stopped at Mohagany Bay a few years ago, it was a very long walk to get to the independent operators, so just wondering how long this walk is

Thanks for any help

If you are asking about the Coxen Hole dock. I found a few pics.

THIS one shows the design of the cruise port and where Main Street is.

THIS one is a proper pic of the cruise port, do you see the small white building in the back left with the white roof, that is the gate out. The walk is very short compared to Mahogany Bay.

Thanks! The tour operator also responded and said it was a very short walk. So very happy it is not the LONG walk we had at the other pier.

The tropics can be hot and humid so I understand not wanting to Trek out to the tour operators.

Enjoy your holiday and the island

Another great thing about Coxen Hole. Once docked, if you look out over the bay adjacent to the shops at the pier, follow the zip line across the water to where it ends. There is an excellent seafood restaurant there. If interested, go to the zipline staff on the pier and they will drive you to the restaurant. They also drive you back.

The place has fresh fish, seafood platters, lobster etc. It is rated on sites so take a look.

We always are torn between doing an excursion and relaxing and having a great lunch right in view of the ship. Prices are very good and the food is fresh and so tasty.
