I am considering taking this cruise but have some questions I hope CC members can answer as I can not find the info on the Seabourn website.

Do the zodiac tours include landings or just "drive by" tours?

Are all landings by Tender or are there docking facilities at some sites?

Does Seabourn give all passengers a waterproof parka?

Are gumboots available for loan or hire and are they even necessary?

Do you have to pay for all landings if not taking a Ship's Tour or are they considered as free shuttles?

What sort of tours are offered at the Greenland sites?

I have travelled to Antarctica with Quark expeditions and just did a Baltic Cruise with Viking Ocean.

I am tossing up whether to do this Seabourn Cruise or the Viking Cruise in the Wake of the Vikings.

I love Viking but Husband likes the longer itinerary in Greenland offered by Seabourn.

We are booked on this cruise. There are no charges for landings if you aren't taking a ship's tour. Tenders are required at 7 ports.

 

There are 2 dedicated Ventures Days at 3 different places -Lady Franklin Island, Monumental Island and Akpatok Island, Nunavut, Canada. I don't think they include landing. Waterproof jackets aren't included, nor are gumboots.

Why not go on SB's website and look at the Aug 2018 itinerary to see the excursions offered? May not be the same as for 2019, but you should get a good idea.

I have looked at the SB website but although the itinerary is there I can not see any information about the shore excursions offered. I thought perhaps only booked clients had access to these. That is why I have asked for info from anyone who had been on this trip or was going on the 2018 trip.

We are booked on Route of the Vikings 2 this August. We have five ports of call in Greenland - all listed as tender except Nuuk which shows us docking. It does note that Qaqortoq is weather dependent. We also have three ports in Nunavut, Canada - two the first day and one the second. They are all listed as tender ports.

 

As to tours, the majority of tours offered are Ventures tours with a zodiac and often a kayak option in each port. There are a couple of overview of the town tours and a handful of flight-seeing tours along with a couple of hikes. In a couple of ports there is an option for a non zodiac boat trip. As to Nunavut the tours listed in each stop are zodiac rides. If you will tell me what you are infested in I will let your know more specifically what is available.

Thank you everyone for your replies.

Are the tender docks close to the villages or do they involve a bit of a trek?

I am happy to just wander around on my own as I am not as mobile as my husband who will probably do one or two zodiacs in Nunavit.

I have a few scary memories of zodiac landings in Antarctica so I will give them a miss:eek:

Can only comment on Qaqatoq, but the landing is in the village. It’s a nice place to walk around, weather permitting, and there is also a fur/skins outlet.

I can't say about this trip, but on the vast majority of my past tender rides around the world, were transported to docks very close to villages.

 

BTW, there is a meetup thread already established for this cruise.

We did this cruise last year and took the tour out to an old Viking village a UN Heritage site. Seabourn supplied heavy one piece suits. It was a great tour and the onboard specialist was the guide. I forget her name, but she was excellent. We thought both stops in Greenland were excellent.

 

Another good tour is in Saguenay of the fjords. Seabourn buses you out to the site where you are fitted out. Here the "zodiac" is not rubber and the guide is local.

Keep in mind that this year’s itinerary is very different from last year’s- they have broken it up into Rt of Vikings 1 and 2. Number 2 is 24 days from Reykjavik to Montreal and includes five ports in Greenland and a couple of days up in the Nunavut territory of northern Canada.
