Taormina for a day

Recommended Posts

We booked a private excursion for the day. Our guide will take us to Mount Etna, Taormina and a local winery with a scenic drive in the country. The tour company was recommended on tripadvisor. Their name is Sicily Life (SicilyLife.com) and it it affordable (well, compared to a similar excursion that we would purchase from Celebrity!)at 160 Euros for the day, for 2.

I hope this helps,

Camelia

I cannot imagine a good reason to pay for a guided tour of Taormina. We really like this smallish hilltop resort town, but you have to understand the town is pretty much two streets. The only thing worthy of a guide might be the amphitheater, but you can simply pick up a brochure or tour at the entrance. Otherwise, you just stoll the main street and look in the shops, grab a bite in a cafe, or eat some gellati. There are spectacular views from inside the Amphitheater and also at the far end of the main street near the hotel. If you ship is stopping at Messina, you will need to take the ship's buses to Taormina or make your own way by using the train line plus a taxi or the cable car. We look forward to returning to this part of Sicily (we have been there twice) and would prefer a full day so we could rent a car and explore some of the small country villages.

We used a tour guide and van driver to take us all around Taormina and the surrounding villages - she pointed out sites in the town, walked us through some of the local stores, took us through the amphitheater, pointed out some of the historic homes along the roads, and drove us up to Mount Etna. We shared the van with several others, so the fare was pretty reasonable - we kept it under $50 US per person, including tips. Write to Diana at trinicria2000@hotmail.com for a price quote.
