katie11 Posted August 15, 2018 #1 Share Posted August 15, 2018 Which of these filters should I use for sun flare? Took some photo's, middle of the day, in bright sunshine. I didn't look directly into the sun, it was on the side, but I have sun spots on the shots. Photo's were taken at the harbour. Shots taken with the sun at my back did not have these spots. Possibly neither one - a lens hood may be a better solution. You may be getting reflections off the lens' from element or internal reflections within the lens. A polarizing filter lets you selectively darken some reflected light - but only some and under special conditions. This is easy to preview with a pair of polarized sunglasses. katie11 Posted August 15, 2018 Author #3 Share Posted August 15, 2018 Thank you. I was trying out a new wide angle lens and it didn't have a lens hood on. So looks like that is the next purchase.
zackiedawg Posted August 15, 2018 #4 Share Posted August 15, 2018 Agreed that the lens hood will be the #1 way to combat that particular issue...filters will reduce glare, adjust exposure, etc, but for flare/spots/etc, a hood is the cure.
gambit57 Posted August 15, 2018 #5 Share Posted August 15, 2018 It's also cheap protection. I had that issue on one old lens. Lens hood solved it. Now, I always use a lens hood just in case a lens could suffer from flares but also for protection as a lens hood has saved me from having something hit the front of my lens (whether my fault or someone else) a few times now. Oak Hill Cruisers Posted August 15, 2018 #6 Share Posted August 15, 2018 But sun flares can make for some pretty interesting photos. Embrace sun flare.
peety3 Posted August 16, 2018 #7 Share Posted August 16, 2018 Read the reviews on how much the lens flares, with and without the sun in the frame. If the sun was in the frame, a lens hood probably won't help.
