Better Ship?? Epic or Getaway?

Recommended Posts

For what it's worth, sorry Epic Lovers......the Epic was the WORST ship we have ever been on. Why do you think NCL cancelled their orders for the 'sister' ships after launching the Epic and the feedback??? Beyond being crammed with pax in narrow halls, and awful bathrooms and no windows in public venues other than lido, a smoky casino open to public venues below decks, poor food....and I could go on. I vote for ANY ship other than Epic!!

All their ships seem to have narrow halls and enclosed spaces, smoky casino open to public venues, etc. From your description of Epic, is Escape really any different? This sounds like my exact comments about Escape.

Getaway, if only because it is newer and has the waterfront area which is wonderful. Waterfront especially is a nice to have for early morning walks and later an evening cocktail at the Sunset bar outside. Really enjoyable ship!

Epic was pretty grungy and while I could go on - from the room to the specialty dining, Epic was subpar after sailing Getaway and Escape (2x!).

I am so disappointed to hear your comments as we have not been on the Escape and the ship looked gorgeous in the harbor....LOL! I just had to comment on the Epic tho, as it was not a good experience compared to the many other cruises we have been on. I guess we will skip the Escape. However, we are going on the Bliss in 4 weeks (sister ship??), and I hope that is better??....we are going with an 'open mind'!! ;p

We sailed the Epic in July 2017 and loved it. I couldn’t understand all of the negative reviews that I had read prior to cruising and I’m so glad I didn’t listen to them. We couldn’t have asked for a better experience all around. It was our first time ever on NCL. We had only done Carnival in the past. We look forward to our Baltic cruise on the Getaway July 2019.

I wouldn't let that stop you from the Escape. She was our first NCL cruise and we loved it so much -beautiful ship!

We have gone on Escape 7 times and Getaway 3 times.

Epic only once. We didn't hate Epic, but love so many things about Escape and 'Away' ships more.

Getaway - for me. Have sailed Epic a few times and its a fine ship thats badly laid out in every aspect. The only plus I would give it is that Epic has a better located Cagneys and Bistro. Getaway has the fish restaurant though - better public areas rather than one long corridor with bars along it and better outside space - the Epic has no proper promenade and feels souless outside. Weirdly though I do like epics mini suite layout - it does tend to be a marmite ship though.

Both of them do look like a block of flats at sea though ;)

Does the epic allow you onto the lifeboat deck (deck 5) for viewing the water? Am wondering as I am going on the epic in November and have only sailed on the getaway, so would like to know specifically what is different as far as the deck space is concerned?

I agree! Escape is a beautiful ship sailed May 2018. Easy to Navigate (and that says a lot coming from me). The crew was amazing. Great time for sure,

This is very true (except for the food).

NCL have learned their lesson.

A great job has been done (correcting epic mistakes done with the Epic).

The Breakaway/ Getaway (not the Escape) is a unique project.

Since 2008, this is the cruise industry's only new project (same size category) that was better than the previous one! And better with a huge margin.

Look at these two pictures below.

This how the Getaway looks like.

Note that anything like this is absolutely impossible on the Epic.

Two (!) promenades on the Getaway:

The stern:

The water slides are more exciting on the Getaway:

My rating overall:

Epic 3*-

Getaway 3.5*+

Happy cruising!

Thanks for posting your pics of Getaway. My husband and I will be sailing on her for our very first cruise in <2 weeks. Your pics seem very fun, exciting, and even romantic, and I can't wait to experience it all myself (and my husband) soon. :D

Personally I felt pulled to sail NCL because of the Waterfront, the SPA, Moderno, and the "go-with-the-flow" attitude the line represents. To me the line appeals to a wide variety of people and has a lot more fun vibe to it without feeling like you're on a party boat. At first glance I was really hoping to sail on the Breakaway Plus class ships, but I was definitely wanting at least the Breakaway class for sure. When choosing our booking, I really liked the itinerary more on Epic, and that water slide bowl looked like a MUST TRY. But we opted for an earlier sailing due to our schedules and my health concerns right now. As our sailing approaches more quickly, I am getting more and more excited to sail Getaway for my very first cruise. Many others have expressed their love for her, and I feel confident that I chose a favorite ship in the fleet for this very first time.

If Epic deems not worthy for you to try due to her quirks, then by all means choose Getaway or any other ship, not limiting yourself to NCL. However, if you feel like you can overlook some of those quirks, then I don't believe you can go wrong in sailing with her if you have the right attitude. It's all how you look at it, and either way you're cruising. Hakuna Mata!

Haven't sailed on the Getaway but have done the Breakaway twice and the Waterfront is fantastic. Other than the Cavern Club and the larger Spice H20 (which had fantastic bar service) we didn't care for the Epic. The beds are not only shorter but very uncomfortable, and neither of us got good sleep. The situation with Deck 5 is also pretty ridiculous in that you can only access it by taking a midship escalator next to the Casino. With so many events in the Atrium, this was very annoying.
