cruisenewb1 Posted October 19, 2018 #1 Share Posted October 19, 2018 (edited) Hi All, I’m planning to go on a cruise early next year, most probably on Ovation of the Seas embarking from Sydney. However due to jet lag I’ll probably be awake for much of the night. Is there much to do at night on Ovation? Is everything closed? A related question: Is there any place on Ovation dark enough to see the stars at night or is there too much light pollution? I'd also welcome responses on any other Royal Caribbean ships which may give me an idea. Thanks Edited October 19, 2018 by cruisenewb1
Tin can Posted October 19, 2018 #2 Share Posted October 19, 2018 I had the same problem sailing from the US on Oasis although I was going to bed early and waking at any time from 3am. Although its a different class of ship the casino on many occasions was still in full flow and there were plenty of people in the dancing venues. At about 4am - 5ish it was strange as the early risers were starting to mix with the few night owls still up. Please bear in mind this was a holiday time cruise so it may not be the norm. A great place for darkness is the heli pad at the front of the ship although at night I noticed on Oasis you couldn’t always gain access.
cruisenewb1 Posted October 19, 2018 Author #3 Share Posted October 19, 2018 Many thanks for that, Tin. Very useful info. Having just Googled though, it looks like Helipad access is usually prohibited on Quantum/Oasis class ships. Anyone have any info on Helipad accessibility? HollandA Posted October 19, 2018 #4 Share Posted October 19, 2018 I haven't been on an Oasis class (yet - remedying that situation next June), but usually any of the walkways/decks towards the front of the ship near the bridge will have less light than the other parts of the ship - they have to keep it darker there to keep from interfering with the crew's ability to see out of the bridge (see also - that's why if you have a room that faces forward you have to keep your curtains closed at night). Even if you can't get access to the helipad, you may be able to find a darker area up front that will do. Good luck!

Rare orville99 Posted October 19, 2018 #6 Share Posted October 19, 2018 On Oasis class, the solarium is always "open" - we've "crashed" there several times after visiting the clubs/lounges and we've never been the only ones up there. The solarium and deck above the solarium is very dark if you want to view stars without much light pollution. I would imagine the same scenario would apply to Quantum class ships. I've always thought this was funny. I'm an early riser all the time. I'm usually up and about before 5 every day of the cruise. I'll go out while my wifes sleeping and get coffee and just wander the ship. I'll know the ship forwards and backwards by the end of the cruise. The best is after the fancy dinner nights. Lots of people still up in their fancy clothes. I couldn't do that even in my younger days. Edited October 19, 2018 by dwayneb236
Rare twangster Posted October 19, 2018 #8 Share Posted October 19, 2018 The winch pad on Quantum class can only be accessed by booking a photo session with the ship's photographer. This class of ship lacks any dark area to star gaze. Maybe the bridge wings off the solarium will provide some (but not much) viewing of the night sky. A balcony cabin in certain places might as well.
