Giantfan13 Posted November 17, 2018 #1 Share Posted November 17, 2018 I am not asking of any one particular city, and not just for Italy, but in general, if you want to do a HoHo bus of a city, can you buy the tickets right at the bus stop or do you need to have them in advance? Like we looked on Viator for tours, and saw a few cities we will be visiting that offer the HoHo buses and they offer you a price to buy them. Are you better off buying them thru a site like Viator or just buying them at the bus stop or on the bus? AND, we would like to charge the tickets if we are going on the bus, would that be a problem if we bought them right at the bus or bus stop? Again, I am posting this in the3 Italy board, but would the same apply say to Spain, Malta, France etc.? Cheers Len
euro cruiser Posted November 17, 2018 #2 Share Posted November 17, 2018 The times that I've used them we bought the tickets at the bus stop, there were salespeople there. Ask questions here (or other travel forums) before spending a lot of money on a HOHO bus. They work well in some places but not in others.
Rare fabnfortysomething Posted November 18, 2018 #3 Share Posted November 18, 2018 yes you can buy them on the bus in most places and they take credit cards there can be several companies but city sightseeing offer a 10% discount if you show your ticket from another city as eurocruiser says they can be good in some places and poor value in others where are you thinking of? CruiserBruce Posted November 18, 2018 #4 Share Posted November 18, 2018 The only time we have had any issue was in London a couple of years ago. We got on at the stop closest to our hotel. However, they were no ticket sellers onboard. At the next stop there was a ticket seller, who came on and issues DW and I tickets. Sometimes purchasing in advance gets you a discount. brian1 Posted November 19, 2018 #5 Share Posted November 19, 2018 Our first experience booking with viator was in Singapore.we got off the ship early to get the first bus at around 8am,to find that the voucher had to be validated at the office which opened at 9.in capetown this year,we booked direct on the bus web site and didn't have that problem. Giantfan13 Posted November 19, 2018 Author #7 Share Posted November 19, 2018 Great. Thanks for the helpful info. We usually like walking off the ship and seeing what the weather is like before really deciding what to do. Cheers Len

Yes, we've never had a problem buying from reps at the stop or from the driver. Only thing to be wary of is that drivers might not be able to accept plastic, though that's rapidly changing. And when there's a stop close to a cruise terminal there always seem to be reps at the stop - and they're geared to accept plastic. When using plastic for any purchases ashore, more & more vendors are offering to convert the charge to the currency of your card "for your convenience". No - not for your convenience, more for their profit DECLINE that kind offer & leave the charge as billed in local currency - your card issuer will convert at a much better exchange rate. Some vendor POS machines automatically provide a choice of local currency or card currency - and vendors have a habit of setting it to the currency of the card and "forgetting" to mention it. Very very dishonest, and a sure sign that its set to a rip-off conversion rate. So check the figure and currency before you pay. Price-wise buying in advance, sometimes you win sometimes you lose but the difference is usually small. More important, buying in advance commits you - regardless of whether your ship fails to port, the weather is foul, a competitor's bus is ready & waiting or cheaper or better, or you decide to do something else. Note Eurocruiser's post. We're fans of ho-hos, but they're a waste of valuable time as well as money in some places - Rome and Florence for example.
