Paying Guides in Japan

We are taking a number of private tours in Japan.  Some of the guides will be paid when we take the tours instead of in  advance.  I believe that I read somewhere that instead of handing the guide the money for the tour directly, you should put the money in an unsealed envelope and hand the envelope to the guide.  Is this correct or do I have it wrong?

I do know that I should not tip in Japan.  Is there anything else that I should know.

When I pay anyone I never put in an envelope as I like to hand it to the provider and count out so there is no chance of question of the amount not being correct.

If I was giving a gift in Japan yes definately into an envelope.
