Cruisin' Chick Posted January 17, 2006 #2 Share Posted January 17, 2006 I think I saw someone wear them on a formal night on my last cruise. If Sean Connery can...
RodneyG Posted January 17, 2006 #3 Share Posted January 17, 2006 On the diamond princess on the Dec/Jan cruise to sydney there were a few scots folk wearing full scottish dress regalia (looked military) including kilts ,dirk in the sock , sporran, sashes and all the trimmings on the formal nights. Looked great and was definitely NOT informal. Im not sure if they went all the way , I never asked the tacky Q of what was under the kilt;) I wore a mandarin style embroidered jacket (2 diff types ) on 3 of the 4 formal nights and got nothing but compliments on it. The first night I wore a dark suit and tie. I think so long as you look smart and folk can see you made an effort , wearing something apart from a tux is fine. I was actually amazed at the lengths some folk went to (the guys) with some really fancy jewelled studs , buttons , cufflinks , shoes etc. Was great to see just about everyone make an effort. joolsb Posted January 17, 2006 #6 Share Posted January 17, 2006 Of course - but the biggest problem is that they are soooooo heavy to carry in your luggage - might be better to travel in it!!!

Im not sure if they went all the way , I never asked the tacky Q of what was under the kilt;) On our recent X transatlantic, one of our tablemates, from Glasgow, wore his kilt. I didn't ask either, but on the last formal night, his wife offered up a wonderfully racy poem about what was under the kilt. I remember only the last line - "A Scotsman's dirty bum" Amy
cruiseryyc Posted January 17, 2006 #15 Share Posted January 17, 2006 ABSOLUTELY - nothing looks better than a Scotsman in his kilt.
donna5 Posted January 17, 2006 #16 Share Posted January 17, 2006 Yes, when we first started cruising there were always kilts on formal nights. Lately I haven't seen any and was wondering why. Maybe is does have to do with luggage weight restrictions being lowered. I miss seeing the kilts.
Druke I Posted January 17, 2006 #17 Share Posted January 17, 2006 Kilts and full regalia - absolutely fine. With my knobby knees and ostrich-like legs - probably not.
MaryPoppinz Posted January 17, 2006 #18 Share Posted January 17, 2006 Absolutely! Peter, our favorite Cruise Director of all time who is no longer with Princess, used to wear them for all formal evenings. Alistair Greener does as well.

Rare Coral Posted January 17, 2006 #20 Share Posted January 17, 2006 I find it too funny that the one thing this board can agree on is that Kilts are definitely appropriate on formal night.

calikak Posted January 17, 2006 #24 Share Posted January 17, 2006 DH has worn his kilt (with a Prince Charlie jacket) on 2 cruises, everyone complements him on his outfit. Just be prepared for random people you've never met before to ask to take their picture with you. :) I would say no to a Utilikilt, though, those aren't formal enough. :D http://www.utilikilts.com/
Floflegs Posted January 18, 2006 #25 Share Posted January 18, 2006 DH wears his kilt as did some others but you are not allowed to have a proper sgean dhu ( knife in sock ) now because of security. "Dummy" ones are available if you can't do without it.
