Latest disembarkation time?

We disembark in Papeete on the 31st and aren't flying anywhere for a few days... so, we're in no great hurry to leave the ship. I'd be perfectly happy to be the last one off. We have a pretty good feel for how early we can get off, but, never having been the last one off, anyone have an idea? Thanks. (obviously we're asking about Papeete, but I guess the answer would not necessarily be port specific)

We usually leave at 9am (which is generally when they say everyone should be off the ship).  BUT -- we've never done a Tahiti cruise and it could be different there.

You will receive notification in plenty of time for you to make up your mind.  They send around a paper asking people what their plans are -- leaving on your own, taking a ship transfer to the airport, etc.  Since you're staying on for a while, just take the last available time.  They DO have to turn the ship around for boarding passengers which is why they want people off early.  But it does seem to me (as ignorant as I am about Tahiti cruises) that arriving passengers usually have a long wait time to board ...

So in essence ... I don't know!  But no one has chimed in yet so I thought I would ...

Mura... always a valued source of info. Enjoy your next cruise. I made the mistake of finding the itinerary and now my wife is drooling over it.  Back to my thing... My plan is to just to remain onboard until the last group is called and leave with them. I have a car reserved so that was my real point as I wanted to give Hertz a good idea of when I would be there, but I'm sure they'll be ok with plus or minus half an hour.

Sounds like a plan!  When you are leaving independently you can leave at any time you want -- whether early, middle or late.  With a reserved car, you really don't have a problem.

But you can let Hertz know your anticipated departure time when the ship distributes the information sheets -- usually 4-5 days in advance of the end of the cruise.  That information will say just when they want all your a$$es off the ship!

Generally speaking, in just about all ports, everyone is asked to disembark by 9 AM - as Mura pointed out.

Papeete might be an exception for those passengers that have O air as some of those flights leave late at night. Perhaps - and I am just guessing - those passengers might be allowed to stay onboard later (or go to a holding room off the ship).

In either case, as you do not have an O flight, this would not apply to you and I would guess that they would ask you to disembark by 9 AM.

PS We were in a similar situation a few years ago but we decided to leave the first night of the overnight in PPT rather than hanging around till 11 PM the next day. Because of this, I do not have first hand experience about disembarkation time - just giving my opinion.

One of my favorite things to do on the last day is to stay on the ship until the 9am departure mandate, leave the cabin at exactly 8am, when we have to be out, and then have a nice leisurely breakfast in the grand dining room. By that time, things are more or less peaceful, easy to find luggage, get a taxi, etc. Avoids all the intensity of groups of people milling about, struggling with carry-ons, sitting unhappily waiting for their group departure.

On Marina disembarkation day Jan 3, the GDR stopped serving breakfast at 8am.

We usually do what Mary does, but would gave had to get there closer to 730. We elected to go to Terrace Cafe at 8.

If one isn’t off the ship by 9:30, they come find you and escort you off. We did an O extension to Cambodia in February and our Group was in the Lounge but didn’t disembark until about 9:15. Security was already rounding up stragglers and moving them off ship starting at 9:00. Saw the same thing several years ago in Stockholm.

I don’t believe that the GDR would seat anyone for breakfast after 7:30 or so on that cruise on that day. Don’t know about those on B2B.

After 8:00, you must be out of your cabin, meaning you’re lugging your carry on and hand helds from that time on. Better to get on with life and clear the ship. If most everyone else has cleared the ship, why would you want your baggage sitting down in baggage claim nearly all alone just to sit on the ship a few extra minutes?

So you can find it easy without rummaging through a bunch of suitcases all looking alike and fighting everyone else doing the same thing?

Unfortunately, we know of at least one instance where a suitcase ended up far from its home!  There was a lot of debate here as to whether that mistake was accidental or not.  (I choose to think it was but some others didn't.)

Still, we do wait until later to leave unless there's a real reason why we need to leave early.  We almost always spend a few days in the ending city but last May in Venice we did.  It was a lot harder to find our luggage at 7am than it usually is at 9am!

So far we've never lost any luggage ...

Ok :classic_biggrin:...again..." My plan is to just to remain onboard until the last group is called and leave with them ". I will leave with a group. No one will have to hunt me down. Also, I believe that luggage can 'accidentally' leave early or late. My bags will be with the last group's and I'm certain security for those bags will be comparable to that for the first groups. Thanks everyone for their advice. I think the time I scheduled the rental car should be ok.

Stan& Jim;

I think you’re confused. The checked bags are collected at around 22:00 the night before from outside the cabin doors. However, after the ship has cleared, the bags are then unloaded by color code and set in the baggage area by color code. I believe the comments on baggage security revolve around the time the bags are off loaded and sitting basically unattended until they are retrieved by the owner.

Ok, my last comment on my poor attempt at a simple question thread... basically what pinotlover just said... and, I do hope there is some security (as I've witnessed in the past on at least some cruise lines) for the bags in the pickup area. Stan/Jim, I've always respected the wealth of information you've provided, however, this will be my 10th cruise, and I know how the luggage thing works. It was a SIMPLE question regarding my rental car timing. Everyone, please end this thread here. Thanks.

I have never had anyone question if the bags  I am taking out of the baggage claim are mine

WE have had 2 close calls

1 was on a HAL cruise ..someone took one of our bags   we looked for 30 mins

I finally got in line while DH gave the description to one of the staff there  just as he was heading to the line he saw someone put  a bag back in the area ..sure enough it was ours

2nd was at a resort ..we all came off the plane the baggage area  was dark  but DH grabbed a bag  that looked like ours  it wasn't until we were at the hotel & in the line to check in that I saw it was not our  bag

lucky for us  the person with our bag was  in the line  as well

I dislike putting my bags out the night before  but I am not going to lug them off  ...beware
