We feel trains are the way to go.  Both stations you mention are important (not major) so are quite well served.  Quick and reliable.  It would be different, say, from La Spezzia to Siena where the bus becomes the best option.

La Spezzia is the gateway to Cinque Terre, so it becomes important.  Pisa station serves the airport, so quite important.  Thus both train stations are well travelled and served.

Have uou had any look finding information on how to get from LaSpezia to Pisa? I am in the spot as you. I am trying to determine if it's worth the extra cost of paying for private tour or DIY in the train.

Not only book ahead of time, but if you do a private tour, make sure the guide knows you want to stay long enough to  get inside and  to the top.   Our guide talked us out of it as he said it would take too much time away fromteh rest of the tour, which was to include Florence.

@Jazzbeau great website, thanks!

I was debating between car rental to get to Pisa from La Spezia, but the train looks like the best option.   Wanted to go to Florence as well from Pisa, but the timing to get back to the ship will be close, so looks like it is either one or the other.

No, Pisa is the ONLY choice.  By the time you get to Florence – and leave time to get back to the ship – there isn't time to do it justice.  OTOH it you were to hire a guide, you could easily do both Pisa and Lucca in a day – but not by train, because the connections to Lucca again eat up too much time.  [I have just done all this research, and decided to take the MSC excursion to Lucca as the only way to get there in a day.]
