hallasm Posted February 2, 2019 #1 Share Posted February 2, 2019 Can you tell us a little about what precautions you take in case of a storm. How strong must the storm be before you cannot sail and what do the ships actually do if they are to pass a hurricane on the planned route? Tony & Trevor Posted February 28, 2019 #2 Share Posted February 28, 2019 They don't have 'hurricanes' in the North Sea. On our last cruise in Norway we encountered a very deep depression with extremely strong winds which kept us in port and then they had to fly us back to Bergen. It was fortunately near the end of our cruise but it did cause many problems for other ships in the fleet as they were confined to port in various places. Kind regards
hallasm Posted February 28, 2019 Author #3 Share Posted February 28, 2019 Thank you so much for sharing your experience. Know that waters - Stadthavet Sea from Måløy to Torvik and Hustadvika Sea between Molde to Kristiansund - just south and north of Ålesund can be rough if stormy weather - for planning it's good to know what the consequences of stormy weather might be. hallasm Posted April 14, 2019 Author #5 Share Posted April 14, 2019 Unfortunately the captain at Viking Sky didn't listen carefully enough to the weather forecast. None of Hurtigruten's planned routes that day passed those waters. Due to the bad weather, the captain chose to stay in Trondheim, for the southbound sailing passing Hustadvika towards Bergen and Hurtigruten hired aircraft to transport the passengers to and from Bergen. Hurtigruten also postponed the March 24 departure northbound from Bergen with half a day , to wait for the weather to be lied.
