Best place to surf in Maui?

Can't help with board rental, but generally, the better surfing is to the northern side of the island. Either north of Kapaula (for you coming ashore at Lahaina) or east of the airport area of the Kahalui. Try DT Fleming State Park just north of Kapalua.

There is also some surfing south of Lahaina, but I don't know it's quality compared to the northern shores. The waves don't look that big, but I frequently see people surfing there.

I don't know what level surf you are looking for but I think the area around Kapalua is more advanced.  May does not tend to bring big waves but can still be fun.  You might try calling Maui's Beach House, 808-661-7828.  They have board rentals and can probably give you an idea when you arrive of a good place to go for your ability.  I learned to surf in the gentle waves just south of the pier in Lahaina.  Have fun, Cherie   p.s.  Have you taken a look at www.surfline.com.  If you put in the location of Maui and click on map you can get an idea of some of the spots.
