Any tips on kid friendly affordable excursions? We want to possibly see the mayan ruins, we're also not opposed to not booking through the cruise line. Thanks!

Ruins are on the mainland and the trip is not cheap - book through the cruise line.

 

Lots of beach clubs on Cozumel that are kid friendly, and easy to do on your own. Check out Paradise Beach and Playa Mia among others.

I wouldn't recommend the ruins from Cozumel.  They are better from Costa Maya or Belize.  There is only a very small ruin on the island that is on the cross island road.  It's worth a stop but not a tour or to spend the whole day.  I highly recommend Chankanaab with kids.  This time around we are taking the kids to interact with dolphins through the cruise line since Cozumel is one of the cheapest places to do it and RCI had a good price on it.
