Rental cars and cell phones are not the end of things.

That new GM car you just bought with "On Star"??? You location can and will be tracked.

New cars now have little black boxes just like airplanes. They continuously monitor what your car is doing. Are you accelerating, are you decelerating, are the brakes applied, which way was the steering wheel pointed, what g forces was the car experiencing, etc,etc.

Good info in case of a breakdown or accident.

This not too surprising actually. If I recall correctly, every single new vehicle made since (I think) 2001 has a "black box" installed in it. It keeps track of whatever your car has done the "past 10 or 15 minutes". So if you're ever in an accident, the insurance company or investigating officers will have it removed and analyzed to find out if you were exceeding the speed limit, or whether you did indeed press the brakes and for how long, etc.

I didn't even realize you couldn't take a rental car out of state...it's weird because I have rented cars on a few occasions for that very purpose...a LONG ride, out of my state and in and out of quite a few others along the way to my destination!!

Usually the smaller, local rental agencies dont want you leaving the state. But most of the larger, national chains allow out of state travel.
