US or Bhat

I lived in Thailand for 8 years.  US Dollars are not used in Thailand for services or goods. But exchange booths are everywhere. Any tourist port will have them on almost every corner. I always got a better rate exchanging $100 dollar bills in Thailand than trying to do with a US Bank.  Also ATM machines are everywhere and give you the best rate but they do have a small service charge of a few USD per withdrawal.  I would never exchange in the US to bring Thai Baht, always done in country.

I live in Tokyo, but will be visiting the USA next month. Should I take Japanese Yen for shopping  - or get US Dollars?

Then again, in Gibraltar they were surprised I did bring actual pounds to buy two coffees. Table next to me it was "oh you want to pay in Euros", faking a complete surprise and probably using an exchange rate that was reasonable in the Eighties 🙂
