There is definately a dedicated Christmas store in Ketchikan.  You will have no problem finding ornaments in any of the Alaska ports.

True regarding Ketchikan. We visited there a couple of days ago, it's right on the port and you can see it from the ship (depending on where you docked). It was very well stocked, lots of unique, Alaska-related Christmas stuff.

When we were coming into Ketchikan, my wife's first view of Ketchikan was the Christmas store from our veranda. It was the last store we visited before reboarding, where she bought several ornaments. We also bought ornaments at Christmas stores in Juneau and Skagway. We ended up buying an Alaska Nativity at Grizzly's in Anchorage.

We found a large (3’ tall) Jim Shore Santa (our collection obsession) in the Ketchikan Christmas store and fell in love with it.  They are very good to ship your stuff home for you, if you find more than you want to carry home in your luggage!

Yes, the store is close enough to see from your balcony if you face dockside.

Kinda expensive, but you can take the glass blowing class in Skagway and make your own! We did this in 2007 as a family, and now that we are all grown and have our own families, it’s nice that we each have this ornament (they are all the same style but you pick colors) in our respective homes.

Not what the OP was looking for but if anyone else is going on a cruise tour that starts or ends at Fairbanks, there is a giant Christmas store a few miles out of town to the east at North Pole, Alaska. It's called "Santa Claus House", open year-round and Santa is there every day.  It's a very nice store.

  • 3 weeks later...

We ended up in North Pole on our HAL land tour because of a detour due to the McKinley fire.  It really is as impressive a Christmas shop as I have seen.

In Ketchikan we did not get to the Christmas store at the port, but we found a nice, smaller one on Creek Street.
