Spirit 01-19 My general review and tips

Hi everyone,

Even if a lot has been said about this cruise, i will post my review and try to do a general overview. I won't discuss the kid's and passengers behavior cause in my opinion, enough was said (please be indulgent and excuse my writing...english is not my first language)

1-- Our background -

A party of 3 friends (women) in our mid 40. 2nd cruise (first was with celebrity from Puerto Rico).. Same date last year!

Why we chose NCL ? = First was the price... $300 cheaper than my last cruise and 3 days more.. not a bad deal !!!! I have to admit that cruising with NCL was overall a little less luxurious than on celebrity.. but with the extra money saved... i have indulged myself alot !!! (speciality rest. Shore excursion. Spas treatement... etc) :p

Second was the itinary...my friend wanted badly to go to barbados

2- Embarkation

Arriving to the around 12h30... long line.. ouf.. But finally, it took us less than expected and we where in our stateroom by 1h15..

I tought it was good !

Only little thing... had our luggage onlu around 6pm

3- Bar Setup

I had ordered a bar setup and it was NOT in my room when arrived... Took a walk at reception desk and it was rapidly solve..

Suggestion : Order your bar setup MORE than 2 weeks prior to your cruise... I did order only a week before and i think that's the reason why it did'nt reach the ship on time!

Tips : Fruit juices are only include with breakfest. Bring an isolated sport bottle and fill it up in the morning. With ice and your favorite alcool (Black rhum was my treat) you will have nice drinks all day long !

Buy at least one souvenir drink (plastic glasse) at the pool.. The rest of the cruise, you can use this glass with drinks that you made your own with your bar setup stuff... Less expansive than buying drinks everytime.

4- Stateroom :

Perfect ! Very well designed, enough space.

I was in 8022.. was worried about noise blending from casino or maharini's..

Nothing !! Very quiet !

heu..... except from our neighbours !!

(in fact, noise blend more from the sides than from floor and ceiling)

Stateroom tips :

I brought a few extra hangers- where very usefull.

The famous OUTLET, so many questions about them in the past !!

Here is my tip :

110v only good for 500w and less ... battery charging and stuff like this.

220v === I got a 2way (110-220v) blower at walmart... for about $10. Important : you also need an adaptor to fit into the 220v (less than $10) and You're on the run ! 3 Ladys in the same stateroom we badly needed this !!

5 - Public rooms

Beautifull Ship ! Wow.. i Really enjoyed it...

My favorites :

Galaxy of the star

The lady spa (nice view), great steamroom.

Shogun restaurant-- asian flair

Lot of deck space

The arcade (some free) famous for kids... but i also enjoyed them

Central Atrium

Deck 7 -- very nice place to have a quiet walk

6 - Dining

In my opinion, food was good to very good.

Shogun was my favorite.. then Cagneys and le bistro.

Regular dining rooms were ok... I must admit that i am not fussy and i take pleasure in trying new things (like anchovies pasta ;)).

My friends did'nt like as much as me... their opininion is that there is too much fish and exotic meals (well... is'nt the caribbeans?:cool)

7- Entertainment :

Good shows in the stardust. Always something to to all over the ship. Great entertainement and congrats to Julie and her team! They work very hard.

I also appreciated the crew show and the star seeker.

And... the disco nigh with... The Gloria Gaynor's imitations where at their best... (hihi.... i was one of the Gloria's ) :D

8- Shore excursions :

Took 2 :

Antigua paddle === I highly recommend.. it was my very best

Tiami (swim and turtle) -- Very good also but antigua had already stolen my hearth at that time !

9 Internet :

Expansive... Avoid using email adress supplied by NCL, it will cost you a lot more than using another email adress (hotmail type). Also.. there are a lot of internet cafe on the island.. If you want my tip.. use them instead..

10- dISEMBARKATION :

Very Smooth !

11- Rough seas...

Very rough.. I must admit.. Free roller coaster. Bring bonine, dramamine, ginger, everything !

I was fine ( Lucky to have sealegs) but one of our friend was dizzy all week long.

12- Sunrise on New York..

I usually prefer nature paths to big city... Before that cruise, i never entended to go to New York....

Changed my mind !

I was absolutely breathtaking. We where only a few on the deck to share that magical view.. Worth the price of the trip..

So that's it... I hope you enjoyed my review!

Needless to say the crew was wonderfull and very PATIENT

Feel free to ask for any question

Oh !!! and i saw the Dragon !

Yes, the beautiful wonderful unique Spirit it is.... Thanks for the wonderful review. And don't worry about your English, I'm sure your English is better than my any other language....

NCL had a choice choosing which ship to be the second ship out of New York year round. NCL chose well.....

Ladycrusoe:

Thanks for the review, I will be sailing in April and it's good to hear a positive review. I know there have been many questions regarding the hairdryers, but...so I understand, if i have a dual voltage hairdryer and the 110 watt is 1875 and I know I can't use it. It doesn't say what the 220 watt is. What wattage was your hairdryer?

Thanks for your help.

Many, many thanks for the nice review. I was beginning to get a little worried with all of the negative stuff on these boards. We leave next Thursday, Feb. 9th - can't wait. We're also signed up for the Antigua Paddle - should be great!!!!

To be honest, I don't know what the fascination is at all! I really have no idea. Everyone mentions it, though. To me, the bar was the most sacred and mysterious part of the Spirit...

Which bar? Every cruise ship sailing the high seas has several bars.

Only ONE cruise ship sailing from North America has a  DRAGON  aboard.

MY hairdryer is 1500w

IF your hairdryer is Dualvolt 110/220v. you should be OK.

Use an adaptor... in order to have it fit in the 220v outlet..

Precision : Some could use a 110v hairdryer with a converter in the 110 outlet but then you can go only up to 1500w (that's the max a converter can do)

For those you ask about...

THE D R A G O N ...

I think it is sort of the Mascot of the Spirit !

You can find it in.....

HUM...

Electrion.. Should we say or it has to be a surprise ???

THE D R A G O N sends positive tought to those you believe !!!

Ciao !

I'm a little confused here. I thought that you could not use any hairdryer in your room, even with an adapter/converter that was over like 500W, or you would blow a fuse and the whole floor could lose power?? I would definitely bring a conv/adapter with a hairdryer but I would not want to risk losing power.

  • 2 months later...

I know this is a very old post but I want to be sure I have things straight now re the hairdryers. I DO have a dual voltage hairdryer that is 1800w. If I bring an adapter and plug it in to the 220 Volt outlet with the adapter I will not blow a fuse?? I would rather walk around with frizzy hair than cause harm to an entire floor but if the above will work than I will definitely bring it along!!

All I know is that DH's razor worked fine and my curling iron did not. Just use the plug by the desk in the room and sit down to do your hair, vanity-style. That's what I did and it worked great.
