How rough can rough seas get?

That was the Queen Mary 2 and it was a Trans-Atlantic cruise. From what I hear Trans-Atlantic cruises can have storms that produce large waves and only certain ships are built to withstand that. I personally think it's fun to experience rough seas. icon_smile.gif The only time I don't like it is when I'm in the theater watching a show. It makes me too dizzy.

It can be pretty rough out there.

Way back in Nov 86, in the China Sea, on the little Golden Odyssey (a 10,000 GRT ship), we were trying to outrun the back end of a typhoon.

We had green water over the bridge, screws out of the water, and inclinometer pegged, often at the same time, as we were bouncing about. Admiral Halsey lost three destroyers to capsizing in those same waters late in WW2 during typhoon conditions.

In Aug/Sep 02, on the large Golden Princess (a 107,000 GRT behemoth), we hit two large Atlantic storms, and we had spray from bow slap raining down on our balcony on Caribe Deck (deck 10). The ship was flexing and groaning enough that several windows along Prom Deck shattered. Bumpy trip.

we had rough seas going back north from the mex riv. on the Song Of America. It was one of Royals old ships. The waves where coming up over the decks and there were ropes keeping people from going out on the decks at every door. My son came in our cabin with a soaking wet shirt and grinning from ear to ear. icon_biggrin.gif The crew told us a story about the Song of America and a transatlantic cross. They said they lost all the lounge chairs off the pool deck. IT must have been wild. I love it too! The Song of America was a fun ship.

Phil: Oh my! The link worked just fine until it went dark! icon_eek.gif Do you think Galaxy could withstand that?

On our Transatlantic last month, we (actually I since Jack missed it) saw a couple standing waves where all you saw was the standing wave looking out our Continental deck (4th) cabin window, but this really surpasses that! Our waves didn't hit the window and we still had light. Plus we were low, so the waves were lower than what the QM2 had, by far. Our Transatlantic was basically smooth seas, but I suspect the stabilizers were in use during the rougher times.

Re: "From what I hear Trans-Atlantic cruises can have storms that produce large waves and only certain ships are built to withstand that":

What happens if you are on a ship that cannot withstand that? Or are those ships not permitted to do transatlantics?

We were on Princess "something" (smaller ship) and the last day of the cruise (into Miami) was really bad. It was in November, in fact it was during the election in 2000 (amazing that the election occurred on our second day and wasn't decided until well after our 11 day cruise).

1/3 of the crew and 1/2 of the passengers were seasick that night. MaryBeth was trying to pack between hurls. She kept telling George to get the hell out so he went down to the Casino.

The dealers were so stoned they could not count to 21. If George had been dishonest he probably could have broken the bank that night.

So yes, things can/do get a little choppy. The where/when, better to hit 16 in blackjack than trying to figure that out icon_wink.gif.

Heard about a Princess where they woke everyone up and told them to move with pillows and blankets to the halls. One lady was sitting on the side of the bed putting on shoes and was thrown to the floor so hard it popped her artifical hip joint out of the socket. I didn't even know that was possible. I think it's true because I read about it from the daughters posts about having to airlift her mother off the ship to a hospital.

These are all great! I'm a thrill seeker....no question. Of course, "thrill seeker" is a relative term. I'm sure my wife would classify it as "stupidity seeker". Case in point...trying to outrun a late afternoon storm in our Sea Ray 215, in Long Island Sound last summer. The Sound was already chopped up and instead of staying anchored, I decided to make the 5 minutes sprint back to the marina. OH BOY, did I catch SH for that...fun as hell though

We're off to Bermuda on July 3rd and it's our first cruise. I've read that the Zenith has large dents in her bow...mementos from dear old Mother Nature years ago. I've also seen photos on these boards of the Zenith swimming pools during less than favorable conditions...Kind of reminded me of the old wave pool at Action Park. Bring on the rock & roll.

Well I can go on forever but I must cut this short. My favorite movie of all time is about to start....The Poseidon Adventure he he he.

Happy cruising everyone

Does anyone have the link to the pictures from the HAL ship (maybe Ryndam) when the wave (green water) broke clear over the bridge. The link was posted over a year ago and I've lost it.

More?? Ok, let's see...

The Norway on a transatlantic we took wound up in an awful storm that lasted 3 days. They actually requested that the ladies wear low shoes until the storm passed and the dining room couldn't keep the china on the table. You'd be trying to eat and a whole set of dishes would fly off the table. The waves kept crashing over the bow so bad that everthing had to be tied down.

Then we have a crossing to Bermuda on the Meridian (she was a favorite of ours). It got so bad that the room stewards came in and turned all the beds around so we wouldn't be thrown to the floor.

Recently crossing, once again from Bermuda on the Horizon, the waves were so bad, the water was coming down the elevator shaft from the pool deck. Then it flooded the stairwells. Interesting trip!!

Next?

Seabourn Pride in September of 1995. These ships are under 10,000 ton, so very small. A North Atlantic crossing where we hit a hurricane with force 10 winds on the Beaufort scale. 40 to 50 ft seas. The window of the front suite was broken, the satellite for the TV was ripped from the top by the wind, the redwood deck from the forward jacuzzi was torn from the deck, a steel door at the bow was crunched like a potato chip, there was 2" of water on the floor of the lowest deck. My friend, who was the assistant cruise director called my room at 3am to tell me had to use the loo and when he stepped out of bed, there was sea water on the floor. The captain had to turn the ship astern so the waves would hit the back of the ship and we cruised backwards at 2 to 3 knots for two days. Missed all the ports and limped into NY harbor. I love the rougher seas and this was one heck of a cruise. Seabourn ships do not handle rough seas well, but we were sure happy we had a great captain to get us through this. I also took the next cruise from NY to Montreal and it was smooth but we still didn't have satellite TV and the phones in the rooms didn't work.

i'll stick with my staniding order from God for calm seas on all my trips please. i personally don't mind a little rocking and rolling. it's just the thought of stepping over people laying on the floor and what they leave behind. plus my wife would never join me again on a cruise if we ran into weather that bad.

While on the Century last year, I met a woman who told me about a rough adventure she had on the Pacific Princess (love boat) on its way to Bermuda. It was one of the ship's last sailings under Princess. She said they hit rough seas and the ship was tilting so bad that all the lounge chairs fell over board. THe pools were emptied out by the tilting as well. Tons of people got very sick. She said it was so bad that many people opted to fly back to the U.S. as opposed to sail back on the ship.

Our last cruises on the Century and the Zenith had rough seas like I've never experienced on a cruise ship. The Captain also announced that ladies should wear low heeled shoes also. I ended up being catapulted out of bed, face first onto the carpet. Split my lip open so badly it took till 5AM to stop the bleeding and I ended up with a major swollen lip and a scab that looked like I had a giant fly on my lip for the rest of the cruise. icon_smile.gif
