Which is better, upper or lower Danube cruise

We want to do a Danube River Cruise in 2021 but not sure on where.  Did a Rhine River Cruise and loved it.  Is lower or upper more scenic?  Looking forward to hearing input from everyone.

We did the upper Danube (Vilshofen to Budapest) back in 2015 with Ama. Beautiful scenery with stops in Melk, Vienna and Bratislava. Budapest at night is magical!

We have done both upper & lower Danube... both are special - in different ways.   

 

The lower Danube has more stops that require busing - where most in the upper portion of the river are "walk off into town". 

 

Both include Budapest - which is an awesome city.  I suggest you extend a couple of days in Budapest - either before or after the cruise - as there is so much to see there.  While most companies offer a Budapest extension, you can easily do Budapest on your own. 

 

The upper Danube has Vienna, Melk (with the Abbey), Regensburg, Nuremburg.  The lower Danube is close to Transylvania - and often gets down to the Black Sea & KM zero.    A great trip - whatever you decide.

Thanks so much for the info.  I think we may do the upper because we can do an add on for Prague and Berlin.

I've done both, and they're both great cruises but very different.  Eastern Europe nothing like Western Europe.  Eastern Europe still digging out from 50 yrs. of Soviet domination.  Influence of the Ottoman Empire can still be seen.

Following with interest as we would like to cruise the Danube when pandemic settles and we are able to travel again.

So looking forward to travelling again...  We were supposed to be in Bucharest next week - spending a couple of nights there before joining our cruise with Avalon up the Danube to Budapest. Oh well...  maybe next year (or 2022...)

So disappointing to miss your Danube cruise. We too had to cancel travel plans (3 generation trip to Greece). Looking forward to travel again hopefully before too long!
