hotels in Oslo

We are looking at a cruise that leaves from Oslo.  Will fly in the day before and are looking for a hotel.  Also any advice on location of where  to

stay and any ideas of cost from airport?  Thanks, Mary

Easy to take the Airport Train from the arrival terminal to Oslo Central Station - many hotels close to Central Station. Walking distance to most sights. Any specific requirements?

Two years ago we stayed in the Comfort Hotel Grand Central which is in the Oslo Central Station.  We walked from the Airport Train to the Hotel inside the terminal building.   It was cool rainy day, so it was nice not to go outside until the weather cleared.  It's a nice modern hotel inside the train station.  They also serve a great breakfast.

Thon hotel chain is kinda the Holiday Inn of Norway .. there are several Thon properties within a couple of blocks of the main train station where the express from the airport delivers you. We stayed several nites in Thon Terminus which included both breakfast and dinner buffets (pre COVID)

no need to buy tickets in advance - buy from a machine with credit card - easy - only pain is dragging your own bags ... you can even load an app to buy tickets thru your phone and see train status . . .

Thank you for all the recommendations.  The only thing is we are not too happy with taking a train. Hubby is 84 and don't want to the dragging luggage.  Any tips on taxis or car service?  Thanks.

A taxi from the airport to Oslo is in the order of US$130 - limo service is US$250 - example is LuxLimo
Taxi prices can vary from company to company -  agree in a fixed price before the trip.

If you do take a taxi from the airport, you should use the electronic kiosk. Prices vary greatly, and you do not need to take the first taxi in the queue. Fixed prices are generally cheaper but need to be booked/agreed up front.

 

If you plan to do any sightseeing within the city, staying close to Oslo S (central station) aka Jernbanetorget is the most convenient for public transit. Alternatively, stay within a block or two of Karl Johans gate near Stortinget or Nationaltheatret.

 

As for particular hotels, it depends on your budget and tastes.

 

At the top end, The Thief doesn't have the most convenient location, but it's the most chic and modern option. Amerikalinjen is a new boutique hotel that's trying to get a foothold in the upscale market with a mix of history and modernity, and it has a very convenient (if not especially picturesque) location. The Grand Hotel is the old-world classic in the heart of the city with lots of history and a central location.

 

In the mid-range business hotels, the Radisson Plaza and Thon Opera are both adjacent to the central station and popular well-regarded choices. The Thon Opera doesn't have as much of a view as it once did, since the waterfront area is being built up more.

 

The above-mentioned Comfort Grand Central has a bit of boutique character and a great location in the old part of the train station. The other inexpensive hotels around the station are typical examples of Scandinavian efficiency. Most hotels in Norway offer small rooms with minimalist Nordic design furnishings, and it's a bit hard to tell them apart. Maybe check the breakfast reviews, since that's probably the most substantial difference.

Thank you for all the advice.  We did book the Clarion which I think is not too far from Central Station.  We are booked for a cruise the end of July and just hoping to go....  Mary

We stayed at the Clarion Hotel The Hub across from the train station in June, 2019.  It had just been remodeled and was quite modern and convenient. The breakfast buffet was quite extensive. 

 

Also, for the OP, there is a service you can (could) hire to transfer your bags from the airport to hotels in Oslo to enable you to take the train or even a taxi without having to deal with hauling luggage.  We (mid 50's) just hauled our bags on the train from the airport to Oslo, but we did hire them to haul our bags from Oslo to Bergen.
