Thanks to both of you for letting me know this.  I had no idea it was any different than cruising to the Caribbean or the Med. I have lots of time as my cruise doesn't leave until December 30th 2022.  I will keep tabs on how long it takes to get a visa as we get a little closer.

Why would you expect travelling half way round the world to be the same as going to the Caribbean???

Just because a country is halfway around the world from the US means nothing.  If someone is from Eastern Europe and they are going to go halfway around the world to take an Alaskan cruise, no visa is required , so why bust on someone that doesn't know a visa is required to visit Australia.

I don't worry too much about travel requirements until I'm six or so months out either - I book lots of speculative trips.  So far, it has never been visas that cancelled any of these trips.  I'm sure they weren't planning on hopping on the plane without googling any number of things, and I'm sure they're glad to have a pointer on one of the things they'll have to Google as the trip comes into focus.

Other than many Caribbean cruises, I have also been to Europe twice, various places in Asia over the years, and my passport was always fine.  One of those trips was to Indonesia, which is really not that far from Australia.  So, distance really doesn't have much to do with it.  Thank you for letting me know the travel requirements.
