Sharjah and Abu Dhabi day trips

If anyone has experienced 1/2 day/full day trips to Sharjah and/or Abu Dhabi (from Dubai) please weigh in on whether these quick trips are worthwhile.  In particular, Abu Dhabi would require almost 4 hrs. of driving (round trip).  We are signed up for the post cruise itinerary and trying to decide whether to go with this plan or take the credit and enjoy Dubai on our own.  Still hopeful that this cruise will indeed sail next year.   Thanks for any input.

We did a day trip to Abu Dhabi from Dubai.  While it was a long day, we had a private guide take us there, we thought the Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi was so beautiful and it was well worth the trip. We also stopped at the Louvre on the way back.  We used Tours by Local guide for our tours in Dubai and to take us to Abu Dhabi.  He was also able to arrange the dunes tour and evening BBQ and show.
