Koningsdam [Pinnacle Class] Aft-facing Verandas (VS and AS) - Cliff’s Notes Summary

After using the search feature on the HAL Board and visited halfacts.com for information on the aft-facing verandas (VS and AS, alike), I did a mini-compilation of my findings.  Instead of losing the search effort, thought I’d share here, in case anyone else is doing the same kind of search!

Decks 4 and 7 are Vista Suites, Decks 5, 6, and 8 are aft-facing verandas.

Most Aft-facing verandas are covered up to about 18 inches from the railing; with the exception of Deck 8 which is mostly covered with the overhang from the pool deck.  Several people commented that Deck 8 have very large balconies (depth); but noted pool deck above.

Cabin Numbers below, specific for the Koningsdam

Here is a Cabin No. Comparison Chart for the 3 Pinnacle Class ships.   Aft-facing Verandas, only.

I discovered when trying to find out information on a certain cabin #, the cabin location can have different numbers between ships within the same class.

BLUE text is a cabin number / location that is the same across all three ships within the Pinnacle class.

GREEN text are cabins that share the same number / location between 2 ships, but not all 3.

BLACK text is no match, ie., the number is only found on that ship.

This may be helpful when you are thinking you are reading a review for a certain cabin no. / location on a Pinnacle ship, to be aware of the subtle differences between the class.

For example, if you are searching for cabin reviews for the Koningsdam for # 5225, the comparable cabin would be #5231 for N. Statendam and Rotterdam, respectively.

Thanks for all the work @hvbaskey! As a coincidence, we boarded today and checked in to an aft-facing AS Vista Suite on deck 7 of the Koningsdam. We departed today for our 7-day Mexican Riviera cruise. This is our first time with an aft-facing stateroom, and because the Koningsdam has only about 700 passengers on this cruise we wanted to give it a try. We've had starboard side Veranda staterooms on the Koningsdam twice before.

The cabin is very nice--just what you'd expect for a Vista Suite. It's a few feet longer than a Veranda stateroom, and I think this aft-facing cabin is a few feet longer than the standard Koningsdam Vista Suite. The good points are that the veranda is longer (but not wider) than Vista Suites facing port or starboard. The overhang is just fine--as you say covered up to about 18 inches. Deck 8 aft-facing cabins are more than fully covered. The stateroom is quiet, but there is plenty of white noise from the ship's wake on the veranda. We haven't noticed any smoke smell on the veranda so far--neither from the ship's stacks or the smoking area at the port side of the Sea View Pool.

The bad, or odd, parts of this stateroom are that the bed is next to the veranda window/door, and the loveseat and desk are close to the closets and bathroom. This is reversed from all the other HAL Veranda and Vista Suite staterooms I've had, it just takes a little getting used to especially when packing/unpacking. I'm sure we'll find a way--maybe after a Mariner's Cocktail or two.  Also, the toilet is at an angle and it's a little cramped--my knee hits the glass shower enclosure.  There is no tub in this stateroom--only a nice double-wide glassed in shower.  Also, being at the stern of the ship we're getting more vibration than we typically would further forward.

One other obvious thing to note for aft-facing newbie's like us is that the bed in our stateroom faces to starboard. That is, the pillows are toward the centerline of the ship. Whereas, on a standard cabin the pillows are either forward or aft. Again, no biggie.

All in all, we're enjoying our cruise in this cabin and look forward to seeing how things are in port--tendered or docked.

The wife and I only take aft facing rooms. Not available we don't do that cruise. One of the things you will notice is that the bed headboard is always on the wall opposite the door entry side. So, when you pick your room you pick your side. Wife gets the side towards the slider, I get the side towards the bathroom. Out in the hall two doors will be side by side, opposite headboards. At least that is the way it works  out for me.

Reposting an in depth review of Koningsdam VS #6216 [noting this cabin # is in the same location on all Pinnacle Class ships per Post #2] as the original post contains great details / info on the cabin with several great photos of the balcony.

CC OP [Full] by Rick-n-MeMe [Dec 2019]

First link has all the info / photos; bullet point links are balcony-related photos / info.

hvbaskey, thank you for starting this helpful thread. We will be in VS 8192 in May.  Can anyone tell me if the bed will be nearest the veranda or the bathroom?

I’m not sure if this will mean anything (so take with a pinch of salt); but the review post for #6216 which is in the same location as 8192 (centre-left), but 2 decks below, has the bed near the bathroom.

I'm wondering if the bed configuration alternates, ie every other cabin.

Yes, would be interested to know as well.

I was thinking though that IF the cabins are the same configuration on each deck, then #8192 would be the same as #6126 (bed near bath) - ie., they are both the third cabin from the starboard side, “centre-left-aft”.

Similarly, #8190 would be the same as #6124 (second cabins in from the left starboard side).

This is all under the assumption that however they are arranged, (alternating or not) on Deck 8, that the same pattern is followed on Decks 7, 6, 5, 4, etc.

Out of curiosity, I’m going to dig around some more 😉

After “light digging”, I did not see a pattern at all!

For example, VS6233 has the bed by the bathroom and the cabin directly above, AS 7192 has the bed by  the balcony.  So, my initial thought of each deck having the same pattern  (ie., the cabins directly above/below each other) is POOF out the window!

OK - after further digging, this is what I have discovered thus far with a “very light sample size” of ~ 15 Aft-facing cabins.

AS (Vista Suites) on Decks 4 and 7, have the bed by the balcony.
VS (Aft-Verandas) on Deck 5, 6, and 8, have the bed by the bathroom.

Again, these results were from a “light sample size”, so if anyone has a different result (eg., a VS category with the bed by the balcony or a Vista Suite (AS Category) with the bed by the bathroom, please post-it and we can scrap this “assumption”  😉

Maybe after all this work these two charts can be added to HAL facts so they don’t get lost.

Hopefully, the OP sends them up to halfacts 🤞

Maybe, once finalized - the research / digging continues ... it’s an incomplete chart with sources from multiple areas, so the accuracy may not be 100% as noted in the disclaimer 😳

hvbaskey, have you seen Celebrity's "Cabin information compilation" thread?  I've always wished HAL had one too.  Can your information be made into a similar permanent thread? Thank you for your time and effort!

I believe bed placement does depend on if the cabin is a Vista or Veranda.

I believe for HAL, we are directed to the halfacts.com site.  I have inquired about a spreadsheet similar to those in the X forum and have been redirected there.   It has a good selection of cabin information for the different class ships.

I began researching the aft-facing cabins as I have one booked for Alaska.  I went down the proverbial rabbit hole 😳 and doing so, thought I’d share what I’ve come up with.  It’s far from perfect, but might be helpful for those searching for aft-facing info (and for me to go back to in the future) 🐬

I love the spreadsheets in the X forum, but it is a monumental task to keep updated 😞

It sure looks like it, even with the small sample size collected.  However!  if anyone finds anything different, I would be happy to update the chart.

We prefer aft cabins so we can see the view on both sides of the ship.  I also like to sit there to get some sun.  We like deck 8 to be close to the Lido and the pool.  Never had a problem with noise.   Just got off the Zuiderdam cabin 8143 aft, which I know is a different class of ship.  The only problem with the verandah was ash from the smoke stacks.

We’ve booked 8201 on the Rotterdam for a Caribbean cruise.  Now I’m wondering if we should move to deck 6 to get more sunshine.  Thoughts?

Updated with new info from Post #23, except for balcony SF for VS8199, as I believe the initial measurement is correct, matches VS8188 on starboard side ☺️.

I also added in grey / italic text, "presumed" SF based on the information of the "mirror" cabin on the same deck (ie., SF pattern is consistent on each specific deck).
Click on screen shots to enlarge, if need be.
