Gratuities

They are charged daily to your room account.  ~$15 per person per day.  You can prepay pre-cruise if you prefer.  Some suites will charge an additional $2-3 pp/pd.  Those charges get distributed to stateroom attendants, MDR dining staff and many behind the scene folks.

How are gratuities handled on Holland america cruises? This would be our first cruise.

Beverages have an 18pct gratuity added.   Spa adds 18pct.    Everyone except casino dealers have some sort of auto gratuity program.  Casino dealers typically share tips but they are not automatically applied.    Room service is part of gratuity pool.

it's very convenient.    Some people tip extra but it is extra and not expected or required.    If you leave the auto tips in place and tip the casino people you are covered.

do not remove the auto tips thinking you rather pass out cash.   This causes a lot of aggravation for everyone as they assume you are not happy and will be very concerned.

We were on the Rotterdam last week,  gratuities were 15.50 per day per person.

From HAL's "Know Before You Go" page:

The daily Crew Appreciation charge is $15.50 per guest per day for non-suite stateroom guests and $17.00 per guest per day for suite guests. The charges are subject to change without notice.

The Crew Appreciation Charge is paid to Holland America Line crew members and represents an important part of their compensation. An 18% Service Charge is automatically applied to all Beverage Purchases, Bar Retail Items, Specialty Restaurant Cover Charges and all For Purchase A La Carte Menu Items. Local Sales Taxes Applied where required.
