Recommendation for transfer from Naples port to Sorrento & return to ship

The most pleasant way would be to take the public ferry.  The dock is located adjacent to the cruise port so it couldn't be easier.

The road to Sorrento is heavily over-trafficked so you risk spending a fair amount of your day sitting in the car.  Once in Sorrento most of what you'd want to see is within walking distance.

Odds are that by using a car service you could get to Sorrento a little earlier (assuming a typical port day of 7 - 7 or 7 - 6) but I'm not sure what you'd do there at 8:30 in the morning.  Not much will be open.

The first ferry departs Naples at 9 AM and arrives to Sorrento at 9:45.

The last return departs Sorrento at 16:25 (4:25 PM) and arrives back at Naples at 17:10 (5:10 PM).

That sounds like a very pleasant and human day to me.  You won't need to race off the ship the minute you dock yet you'd still have plenty of time in Sorrento.

Thank you.  Great idea.  We've done the Amalfi coast several times, and the last time Positano was so crowded we couldn't walk...so just want a relaxing day in Sorrento with a nice lunch.  I'll check it out.

I agree with the ferry being best but the times are limited to Sorrento.  Check Naplesbayferry.com for schedules.  They sell for every line.  If you can’t find a time to line up with the ferry, the circumvesuvia train is another option.  It will take a bit longer but they run every 20 min.  Porta Nolana is the closest train station, 15 min walk from cruise port.  You can also take metro (yellow line, universita) across the plaza 5 min from cruise port to Centrale and walk downstairs to Garibaldi (under Centrale) and catch circumvesuvia there.  It ends in sorrento.

also, there is the campamia express train that only runs at certain times for tourists on the circumvesuvia route.  Another good option but check ferry first!  It’s a nice ride.

Please don't do this.  Naplesbayferry is a reseller, all they do is sell a voucher and if you do a little research you'll see story after story of customers who have had problems.

It's very, very easy to look at the schedules and buy directly from the ferry companies without the middleman, especially on the Naples-Sorrento route as there is only one operator (well, there is a second one on weekdays timed for Sorrento commuters that wouldn't work for a Naples cruise passenger anyway).

Probably the easiest place to see the schedules is here:  2022 Capri ferry schedules: from Napoli to Capri - Book online but again, do not buy through this site.  They're great about keeping information updated but the fees they add on to the fare are practically usury.

Ah, the Circumvesuviana. Most tourists hate it. It's often extremely crowded, stifling in summer, and rife with pickpockets. I would hands down recommend the ferry to Sorrento over this train. (That said, I have a certain fondness for it, having used it many times getting round to all the archaeological sites around Vesuvius...)

Regarding the ferry to Sorrento -- some may not understand that it arrives at a pier at the foot of Sorrento. To get to the town above, you either walk up a twisting set of steps (more than a hundred) that seems to go on forever, or you can, for a couple of euros, take a large public elevator up to street level. (Just look for signs to the elevator.). There's also a sort of mini bus going up and down the steep access from the port to Piazza Tasso (the town's main piazza).

Taxi mister cab driver Naples & Amalfi coast on Strikingly (mystrikingly.com)  this is who we used back in 2018 and it was great.

I'm not sure what's going on with their site, but there's not any extensive information for tours, pricing or to even contact anyone with questions???

@euro cruiser- thanks for the tips on trains and ferries.  Unfortunately we can't take the ferry from Sorrento back to Naples, as it arrives too late.  So we may have to take the train for the return unless we change our plans & do a tour.

As above.

Ferry OR Circumvesuviana railway.   Rail is much for frequent than ferry.

IF you go with rail....be very aware of your surroundings.  Lots of pickpockets on this line. Also, be careful to get on the right right train since there are (or were) two routes.  The train also stops at Pompei site.
