On board credit

If it's non-refundable you can ask that it be added to the crew gratuity pool. That way it goes to the hard working crew, who have had some people remove their gratuities, and it doesn't go back to corporate.

I applied a gift card to OBC….probably shouldn’t have put it there, as there will be no way to spend it all.  We will be paying the gratuity, but am hoping the excess can be refunded.  Probably a dumb error on my part ?

Ask guest services for a printout showing the breakdown of non-refundable and refundable OBC.  It all depends how you got the OBC.  If it’s from HAL then that’s usually non-refundable.  If it’s your gift card or from your travel agent then that should be refundable.

It’s from a gift card that I purchased myself.

Then if you don’t spend it they may refund it to you in the form of a gift card.  Check with guest services when you board.

If you have an onboard credit are all purchased automatically taken out if it until it is used up and then charged on credit card?

Yes - OBC is charged before any billing to your credit card (except for casino play IF you have non refundable OBC).

I received two "refundable credits" issued to me by HAL as compensation after they canceled four of my cruises on the Volendam this summer ("refundable" per the cancellation emails from Gus). One has been applied as onboard credit on an upcoming sailing, and another is in my Mariner Account awaiting application to a different sailing. I won't be able to spend these during the upcoming cruise, unless I buy some watches that I don't wear 😉 or cancel & re-book some shore excursions while on board.  If I don't spend the credit, is it refunded to my credit card at the end of the cruise or just lost??

If it is truly refundable if unused it will be credited to your credit card.

I recommend looking up your on board account (paper might be better than the navigator app for this) and check your credits - it’s not hard to tell which ones are refundable and which ones are not  (not for use in casino = non refundable).  Most HAL credits are usually non refundable.

I looked up m credit from Gerald and the words refundable are not used.  So, if yours are refundable, I would take a print out of the letter with me in case they are shown as non refundable to have it amended.  JMO.

Thanks for the good suggestions. How do you look up an onboard credit, though, on paper or otherwise to see its terms?

[Just to be clear, this is not a Future Cruise Credit.]

When you look at your statement - you will see either “gift order - preliminary manifest” - these are refundable.  (they are usually shown in $100 increments - or at least, they used to be).

Or “Promo Credit”. Or “Promo Credit (not Valid for Casino or Cash) - these are NON - REFUNDABLE.

Terms may have changed since I cruised but I suspect they are very much the same as HAL has used promo credit for some time - Promo Credits are usually HAL credits and HAL credits are non refundable.

Hope this makes sense and helps?

I think you’re talking about the statement you can access on paper or via Navigator while on board?  My sailing isn’t for a few months and I’m just planning ahead and setting my own expectations. 🧐

Sorry, yes I’m talking about on board.  Not sure if you will be able to see it on the Navigator app or not.  I can’t see mine yet but I don’t sail for nearly 6 months.  Hoping I will be able to down the road pre-cruise.

On the Navigator App looking at your account you can see at the end the refundable and non refundable amounts listed separately. You can check frequently when aboard that expenses are being correctly subtracted.
Note the On Deck Walk for a Cause is for Ukraine just now rather than cancer. If you donate to this the money comes out of the non refundable amount. You don’t have to walk.
