What to do on debarkation day with a 3:00 flight out of FCO

Trying to figure out what to do after debarking the Edge on September 10th. We have a 3:00 flight on British Air to LHR with a connection to JFK. Not sure what the latest time we can get off the ship is… we were planning on using Rome Cabs but was trying to avoid being at the airport 5 hours before the flight. Although with the stories I have read you seem to need a lot of time…any suggestions on how to spend the day

I just flew back to the States from Rome last week.  The FCO Airport in Rome is one of the most chaotic, challenging airports I’ve ever been in. Leave yourself plenty of time to get through all the lines.

During our online checkin, Delta Airlines recommended arriving to FCO Airport 3 hours early. We arrived exactly 3 hours early and by the time we went through all the lines, we arrived at our gate with only 20 minutes to spare. Also keep in mind the port in Civitavecchia (Rome) is about 45-60 minutes away from the airport.  So in all you’ll need to budget about 4 hours for the airport.

You'll want to be at the airport by noon, which means leaving Civitavecchia around 11.

The problem with arriving at the airport even earlier is that the counters for check in won't be open so you'll be stuck standing in the departures area with your luggage.    There is a small place to grab a coffee and something to eat in the departures area of T3, but that's about it.

I would ask what the very last slot is for getting off the ship and have your car service meet you then.

As long as your departure day isn't a Monday, the ruins at Ostia Antica would be an option.  They're just 15 - 20 minutes from the airport and they open at 8:30, so you could spend three hours there before heading to the airport for a noon drop off.

Us Rome Cabs, but look at their option for an added excursion on the way to the airport. It would be better than sitting around on the ship or airport.

Or why not take one of the combined transfer and sightseeing options from the ship if such are offered?

We highly recommend Rome cabs as well,  the Etruscan museum at Tarquinia is really excellent and would be a good way to spend an hour or two.   Or the Etruscan burial sites at Cerveteri is also an option.   That way you will enjoy seeing something while still arriving at the airport a minimum of three hours prior.
