Ideas From Naples?

This is very far in advance for the 9/15/23 Odyssey. We are in Naples from 8am to 6pm on a Saturday. We have been to Pompeii and Herculaneum and have no desire to return. Also, this itinerary will be stopping in Ephesus and Athens so that will be sufficient for ruins. One in our party uses a walking stick because of slight mobility issues, so that is a consideration.

We have spent time on the Amalfi Coast but would consider visiting Amalfi, Positano and Sorrento w/lunch and hiring a private tour/driver. Or should we consider just spending the day in Sorrento? Is taking the ferry from the port an easy option? I’m guessing Saturday might be problematic so any suggestions would really be helpful. Although we have ported in Naples many times, we have never actually explored Naples…..an option?

thank you!

Taking the ferry from the port is very easy, the pier is adjacent to the cruise port.  Once at Sorrento there is a public elevator to bring you up from the port to the main part of town.

If you enjoy what Sorrento has to offer it would be an easy, relaxing day.  There is a ferry at 9:00 that arrives to Sorrento at 9:45, and a return that departs Sorrento at 14:00 (2 PM) and arrives to Naples at 14:45.  That's early for your departure but the next ferry at 16:25 would be too late.

Naples itself is a great option, if you like city visits.  You walk off the ship right into the historic center of town, it could not be easier.

Three popular sites are less than half a mile from the cruise port, Teatro San Carlo (opera house), the Galleria, and the Royal Palace.

The famous Gran Caffè Gambrinus is right there as well.

Is taking the ferry to Sorrento more interesting than Capri or about the same?  I'm trying to decide between the two as DIY trip from Naples for the day.  Our ship is in port until 8:00 pm, so we have more time than OP.

Do you ask about the ferry or the destination?

The ferry Trip to Sorremto is probably nicer, as destination Capri has so much more to offer.

Sorrento is the lowest key option, the Amalfi Coat the most spectacular, but you have been there, Naples the most interesting in Terme of culture and sights. The main street in the older part is full of churches, beautiful cloisters and such. Gold, glasses and other artefacts from Pompeji can be found in museum.

And more.

The question was about the destination.  Which place has more to see and do after the ferry ride?

In this case, definitely Capri.

Sorrento is just a lovely, relaxed village with beautiful scenery.

Capri offers beautiful scenery, too, of course, yet in a much wider variety.

You can do a boat tour to the blue grotto or a tour up the Monte Solaro.

Visit the ruins of the Villa Jovis of Roman emperor Tiberius and the Villa San Michele of Axel Munthe.

Our plan was to take the ferry to Capri. BUT the seas were rough and after 2 ferries they stopped running them 😞 So we did a last minute decision and took the train to Sorrento. We really enjoyed wandering around Sorrento and having lunch. But still really want to get to Capri!
