Cell phone reception

I am concerned with the possibilities of not having cell phone reception (especially sailing through the Sounds). It is important for us to have the ability to make/receive calls to/from the US. Many years ago we rented a satellite phone, and we’re thinking about doing it again. Does anyone have experience with this? Thanks!

New Zealand mobile networks have limited coverage along the Milford Road and there is no reception in Milford Sound.

 

So I would assume there won't be any reception for your cellphone in the sounds (Fjordland) or do you mean the Marlborough Sounds at the northern end of the South Island?

You're not going to have cell phone coverage out at sea. Get the internet package.. and check your e-mails sporadically.
