Slovenia removed from itinerary

If it happened while on board, it was a "missed port" and that is not an unusual occurrence. There are many reason why a port is missed (usually weather issues) and it is announced on board at the time it happens. Unless a written notification was also issued, you probably did not hear the announcement (which are not routinely broadcast into the cabins unless it is an emergency). Only people who were on board with you have a chance of knowing why the port was missed as Viking does not make routine public announcements of such happenings.

Read more about missed ports and changes to the itinerary on the Viking website legal page  in both the "Booking Terms and Conditions" and the "Passenger Ticket Contract."

Does anyone know why Slovenia was removed from the Viking Sea itinerary on the Sept. 7 sailing? As far as I can recall, there was no official notification given while on the cruise,

Ports being cancelled are a common occurrence on many cruises.

The most common reason is weather, but you can also experience cancellation due to labour issues (pilots, tugs, longshoremen), lack of berth space due to a ship breaking down and/or delayed working cargo, port being closed, ship being denied entry due to a multitude of reasons, civic unrest in vicinity of the port, etc.

Less likely is propulsion issues with the ship, but that is usually in conjunction with wind.

On every Viking cruise I’ve been on where a port was missed, there was always a notice—either by captain at noon announcement, or loud speaker in the morning when they couldn’t dock, or sometimes an announcement in the Star Theater at the evening show—as well as by letter delivered to the state room.

We heard Slovenia was cancelled on the first day of the cruise from a fellow passenger.  This port was scheduled for day 9/10 day cruise. Agree, hoping someone will read this that was a fellow guest and have more information. We ended up spending an overnight instead in Chiogga.

Viking are very quick to cancel stops. In our experience much quicker than other lines who are better at finding alternatives. (We had sea days whilst others found docks in Norway and twice watched Viking have sea days whilst we went to alternatives in Italy and Greece). So from our experience they have a much lower tolerance of sea conditions and far fewer Plan Bs than others.
Our onboard cancellation we were unaware of as the announcement was made whilst ships tours were still ashore. No letter was issued and they refused to give us one onboard so we could claim on our missed port insurance. Eventually got one from the head office but what a hassle
