Royal Caribbean Amex Platinum

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I am new to Amex Platinum and may like to use our cards to book a Royal Caribbean Cruise.

-What amex platinum benefits do we get?  Are certain travel agents authorized amex platinum agents to not have to book directly with amex?

For Amex Travel Insurance - does anyone know if this is sufficient for medical coverage?  I know it is secondary, but if we have no other insurance, I imagine the medical/evacuation benefits would go into effect.  Does anyone have any answers to the below:

-What medical coverage is included?

-If a family member across our two related bookings gets the flu or covid prior to the cruise, are there cancellation benefits that would reimburse us the cost of the trip?

-For platinum travel benefits, I know the full trip has to be booked with an amex platinum card.  If there are 4 family members / friends across two rooms, can we each use our platinum card with the reservations being fully paid for by platinum (2 platinum cards in each of our names per each room), or does it have to be the same one platinum card per reservation?

-Are there any add on options for additional coverage?

-Does anyone have experience with coverage and claims?  We've used Travel Insured and they were a nightmare to deal with for claims.

-for trip cancellation and interruption if included in a policy, if a family member was to get Covid a few days before the cruise and a doctor deemed them unfit to travel, would this be covered?

-for trip cancellation and interruption if included in a policy, if a family member was to get Covid during a cruise and is required to quarantine for the rest of it, would they be entitled to reimbursement?

-if we have 2 rooms for 4 people and if one person gets Covid or the flu prior to the cruise, would we all be able to cancel if we have connecting reservations?  Or would only the person in the room with the Covid positive person be entitled to reimbursement?  We all live in the same household if that matters.  We wouldn’t want to cruise without each other if one of the four of us was to be unable to travel.

Thank you very much

Thats alot of very specific insurance questions that are best answered probably on the travel insurance board.

Amex has a website that details cruise perks for using your card - only mentioning it because I see you posted this on more than one cruise line board.

From my experience, any TA you book through can get your AMEX perks.

You have to book thru the amex portal for the onboard credit.  Not sure how much it is as I don't book that way.
As far as insurance goes, amex plat has no cancellation insurance.  The delay insurance is only if that happens.  Medical is secondary.  So basically that means, you pay first.
We keep our cards to use in the centurion lounges when we travel.  But you need to buy trip insurance using this card unless you are ok about covering the loss.

You should just sign into your amex account and you can read exactly what you have for medical evac etc

Best advice...buy travel insurance that fits your needs.  Or get a Chase card

Not all travel agents can/are willing to jump through the additional hoops required to apply the benefits to the booking.

I've pretty much given up on trying to use it for cruises on Royal; every time I ask it's not combinable with whatever rate I'm booking.

I have had luck using it for sailings on Cunard, it seems to 'stack' better on that line.

Secondary means it pays any excess after your primary insurance pays. With travel insurance, you always pay up front and file for reimbursement; but, far as I can tell, the Platinum card does not provide coverage for medical care.

AmEx Platinum card offers trip cancellation, trip interruption, and trip delay - all for limited, specific purposes. Delay is for common carrier, not illness. Evacuation provides for transportation to a hospital not the hospital bill.

Thanks.  Is anyone able to confirm if the platinum benefits can be redeemed through a travel agent?  Is it only for certain travel agents?  Can we split between two Amex platinum cards and get the benefit?

I've received it booking through travel agents on Royal, Celebrity, and Norwegian sailings.  If using a TA, just tell them up front.

I am also relatively new.  this is only my 2nd booking, but this is what I was told.  Not all travel agents have the amex partnership.  My original travel agent who i used last month for NCL cruise told me they discontinued their partnership w/ Amex last month and told me he could book my RCCL cruise, but I would have to call in to amex on my own for benefits.  I called into Amex to find out what they would need when I call in.  They told me, Don't do that.  Cause lots of folks try and the thing is that they said their system doesn't allow them to just apply them to external bookings like that.  If the Travel agent has a partnership, they are given access to some site which will gives them a code to apply to your booking. So advise you ask first before booking w/ any travel agent.  My new TA wasn't advertising the amex benefits, but when I asked, she said they did have the partnership, and was able to get it applied to my booking.

The free travel insurance that the card comes w/ does not have any medical.  I called to ask last month.  And so my family end up buying a 3rd party one for piece of mind.  Advise you to call Amex and ask the rest of your questions.  They were easy for me to get ahold of to ask.

I am not sure what you mean by split 2 amex.  But with your one amex, you can have the benefits applied up to 3 rooms, as long as amex holder is also on same booking.  I was the only one w/ card and since I paid for my parents room too, with it, they also received benefits.
