Commute from Venice to Ravenna

We’re on the Explorer of Seas May 21, 2023 leaving from Ravenna.  We didn’t realize Ravenna was such a distance from Venice. What are the best ways to get to Ravenna from Venice either on a Saturday or on a Sunday morning.

We were there last week on Sunday morning. Viking provides a shuttle which runs every 1/2 hour to the Stazione port. The ride is about 25 minutes. From the port, you have to take the “people mover” which is a 5 minute walk from where the bus drops you off at the port. Ride the people mover one stop (there is only one stop).  When you get off, you are at a main transportation hub where you can get a water taxi.

We walked as we had no particular destination and like being off the beaten path.  If your goal is St. Mark’s square, it should take about 1/2 hour at a decent pace. It’s a process!

Going back, you just reverse the process. Get to the people mover (just put it your map app as “people mover”), get to the port and then find the bus!  One small glitch is that when getting back on the bus, for some reason, we had to go through security at the terminal. That involved another 10 minute walk which was fine with us, but others were very upset. Must have been a requirement to enter the Ravenna port?

I'm not sure Viking would be transporting RCI passengers, but RCI probably offers a bus of their own, for a fee.

Other than a cruise line bus, your options are a private transfer, train, or bus.  Private transfers are the easiest but also the most expensive option.

Train requires you to be able to deal with your own luggage on and off the train (and there will be a change of trains en route, there are no direct trains between Venice and Ravenna).  Bus is slow (about three hours) but gets you there inexpensively (as low as 9 euro on Flixbus).

Both the train and bus options also require you to get from downtown Ravenna to the port, about eight miles.  Again, RCI may offer a shuttle bus from the train station to the port, or there is a public bus or taxis.

Yes RCI provides a shuttle bus for a fee from either Venice airport or from somewhere in the city to the port of Ravenna. This is the safest method of transportation as you will be dropped off directly at the ship. I believe there is also a shuttle to the port from Ravenna station for those using the train from Venice.

Yes, RCI do a shuttle. We're on Explorer in September 2023, flying into Venice. I looked at many different ways of getting from the airport to the ship and they were all expensive or involved lugging luggage on and off trains/buses/taxis. For us, the cheapest and easiest way was to add RCI's shuttle to our booking. The shuttles are timed for the flights and take you direct from the airport to the pier in Ravenna. We'll be paying £36 each return. Not sure where you are based but I'm sure you'll be able to convert this into your currency.
