Where the ship docks in San Francisco can we walk to anything interesting?  Do we have to take a tour or is there something close by?

The whole area is a tourist trap of world renown - Fisherman’s Wharf.  There’s also the Ferry Building which has delightful shops and restaurants.  
 

if you want to cover more distance, it’s very possible to use the Muni streetcars to get around - the stop is right at the entrance to the pier Princess uses.  There’s also an automated bicycle rental station right there. No tour necessary.

Plus the Alcatraz Island ferry is immediately next door. Purchase tickets in advance. 

 

Taking a look at Google Maps or similar sites would be very informative.

I always try and schedule a walking tour or two through SF City Guides - free, very well-trained guides, extremely informative. Tour routes are scattered all over, check the schedule for your date.

The ship docks in the middle of the City. As others have said, you can walk ti Fisherman's Wharf, the embarcadero with the Ferry Building and you can walk into North Beach (Little Italy) for great dining like Tony's Pizza Napoletana, which is consistently name among the 50 Best Pizza Restaurants In The World and Sotto Mare, which has the best cioppino in San Francisco, plus a dozen more great places.

 

There is also Saints Peter and Paul Church, City Lights Books, famous for its role in the Beat Movement, Coit Tower and Washington Square Park.

You can buy a bus pass on MUNI and use the public transportation to get around. Don't bother with a HOHO. The city is just under 7 x 7 miles. You dock in the upper right quadrant. The vast majority of things to see are in this quadrant. So 2.7 miles walk one way. Use Google maps and plot out a route. Going straight does not mean easiest as there are hills. So select the bike option that will easiet route. You need to find a bike map that shows the hill grades. You do NOT need to take a tour.

 

"The ship docks in the middle of the City." That wouldn't be possible. LOL. I've never heard it described this way before. LOL.Think of SF as an island. And you dock on the side that's close to downtown.

Of course it is possible, especially when you consider the number of cruise ports where ships dock far from the city that supposedly you are visiting and you need a long bus ride to actually get to the city.

San Francisco has so many tourist attractions, including Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz, Cable Cars, Fisherman's Wharf, The Presidio, Painted Ladies, Golden Gate Park, Lombard Street, Coit Tower, the diverse neighborhoods...

 

Unfortunately, you probably won't have enough time during your stop to take the N Judah line to Ocean Beach and enjoy the sun set.
