mermaid 285 Posted December 2, 2022 #1 Share Posted December 2, 2022 We aim to be on the first tender and rent a car in Moorea. We have previously rented cars in Moorea from Avis near the ferry terminal. Am I correct in thinking that they will bring the car to where we get off the cruise ship? Is there free parking there? Is it realistic for us to be on the road by 9 am?
Rare Tahitianbigkahuna Posted December 3, 2022 #2 Share Posted December 3, 2022 Avis has changed their policy a few times over the years ... They used to have the cars at the tender drop off ... then they stopped and simply picked you up in a van and transported you to the head office across from the ferry terminal ... that wasted an hour plus you had to return it to the same location, then wait until enough returns came back that they would transport everyone back to the tender location. I've been told that they may have started taking the cars to the tender location ... this may depend on the location as Cook's Bay is much closer than Oponupo Bay to transport cars. There is free parking in Oponupo Bay but not over night as it used to be. Best to contact the local Avis and ask these questions as everything seems to be fluid. Wendy The Wanderer Posted December 4, 2022 #3 Share Posted December 4, 2022 Some years back we had an Avis car booked to be delivered at Cook's Bay and they never showed. Fortunately Albert's was there, and they took care of us. Not sure how they do it now, but their offices are closer to the two bays than Avis. liamur14 Posted December 9, 2022 #4 Share Posted December 9, 2022 We rented Moorea Avis for 1 month, pick up was at the ferry terminal. We were on on way in no time. We had a flat tire ,they came to our villa to change it as there was no spare, but instead they just dropped off an upgrade car and took the car with the spare on it back to the shop.We found them very , friendly ,professional and helpful.
astrocat Posted December 21, 2022 #5 Share Posted December 21, 2022 We were just there and it was such a shame that "the Avis lady under the tree" is no more .. it was one of the iconic moments of being in FP! We ended up taking a tour with Jo's (Luana) as getting to the Avis site would have been a big hassle (as TBK as noted). The tour (only 4 people) was fantastic so that ended up being a bonus.
mermaid 285 Posted December 23, 2022 Author #6 Share Posted December 23, 2022 So if you want to rent a car they won't bring it to the cruise ship (tender) dock anymore? I don't mind pre-booking, but getting to the ferry terminal to pick it up could be quite a challenge.

They Avis could say the same thing ... getting to the tender location in Oponupo Bay to pick you up could be a long drive 😉

We previously met them at the airport. Bearing in mind the lack of public transport it would make economic sense, even if they charged for the pick up. As someone else indicated, it discourages you from making the choice to rent a car, and choose another activity instead.
