ways to use on-board credit from canceled excursion?

We have booked a July cruise to Alaska and are planning excursions. We are considering splurging on Dog Sledding and Mendenhall Glacier by Helicopeter or the Helicopter Glacier Walkabout. Both excursions are very pricey. My question is if we book the excursions through HAL, and it is canceled due to weather, what could we use the refunded onboard credit for? Are we limited to using them for another excursion? Do the funds need to be used on this cruise or coud we use them on a future cruise? Is it possible to use the funds to book another cruise while on board? Thanks for any advice!

Assuming that you paid for the excursion (via credit card) when booking it, that onboard credit will be refundable, meaning if you don't spend it during your cruise it will be put back as a credit to whatever credit card you have on file.  If you choose, you can book another excursion while on the ship, assuming anything you're interested in has availability, and the onboard credit would be used (any nonrefundable would be used first, then the refundable).  They wouldn't be carried over to a future cruise - they'd go back on your credit card if you didn't use them on this cruise.

If any portion of the excursion was paid by HAL's Have it All promotion, then you won't see onboard credit for the cancellation.  You'd need to either book something else (that cruise) to use your credit, or you forfeit it.

HAL wants cash/credit deposits for future cruises (unless you have future cruise DEPOSITS to apply) even if you have future cruise CREDITS to use, so OBC are use it or lose it while currently cruising as Sue stated above.

If you are faced with spending the OBC onboard or losing it, I would buy some GoPro's from the photo lab.  They hold their value and you can easily sell them on Ebay or other places.   You will probably be able to recover 80% of your OBC....not perfect, but better than zero.
