Any disadvantages for going for a stateroom that is near the rear of the ship?

First timers. Planning a cruise and looking at possibly the Aqua Class staterooms of the new Celebrity Edge class series of cruise liners. The Aqua Class rooms all seem to be located from just rear of the middle of the ship all the way back to the rear most part of the ship. The cruise we are looking at is 16 floors and these staterooms are specifically more towards the rear of floors 9 and 10. We’d probably want to go for floor 10 to be a bit higher up which presumably might be better for views. Is there anything we need to be aware of when booking this stateroom, ie is there such a thing as “being too far back”? Is it preferable to be situated further forward asides from the obvious reason of closeness to lifts and stairs? Any noticeable impact on the comfort of the journey, eg noise or motion sickness, etc? Clearly we don’t have a clue! Thanks for your patience!

There should be minimal difference in view between decks 9 or 10. If anyone is prone to motion sickness, the lower you are and the closer you are to midships, the less motion would be felt. To minimize risk of noise, look for cabins that have cabins directly above and below.

I had a look at the deckplans of Celebrity Edge and there is essentially no difference between Deck 9 or 10. As @mom saysindicated, the view will be the same. Both decks are "sandwiched" between other cabins above and below (a good thing). There will be no difference is motion between the two decks; motion of such a massive ship is going to be pretty minimal and if you feel it, everyone is feeling it!

 

I would choose a more forward cabin within the Aqua Class, just as you said, to be nearer the stairwells which are the hubs. The views will be similar (you aren't looking at actual AFT cabins, which do have the more expansive "wake" view). As far as port or starboard, that might depend on your cruise's route.

I have never had an absolute aft balcony cabin.  BUT I have read people post that these sometimes have a fine black soot all over the balconies.  Just FYI

Far aft is a good location -- but it does mean more walking, so it isn't for anyone with mobility issues.  Usually far aft means the buffet is just straight up a set of stairs.    

 

I've had an aft-facing cabin.  No problems with soot.
