From Messina to Taormina

Has anyone taken a tour or the train on your own from Messina to Taormina?

Yes I have. A fast 15-20 mins walk to Messina station and easy train to Taormina. The bad news is that the station is out of the centre. There is a public bus you can get which gets busy. Last time we decided to walk which wasn't a good decision!  Big hills in August are not recommended!

So wait for the bus or get a taxi. Think EUR15. Something like that.

And be in time for the bus, because they do not run every x-minutes!  We missed it a few years ago and had to go by taxi we met during our walk back to the terminal (perfect by the way, he was back in Taormina for our returntrip at the time of our appointment and we paid after he brought the four of us back as close to the ship as possible. Not all Sicilian taxi drivers are - you name it. )

Trenitalia now offers a train + bus combo, if the timing works for you.  Choose Taormina Centro as your destination to see the connection.

This is what we are going to attempt to do. A train to Taormina. How far is the walk, is it like 20 minutes or more? 

It looks beautiful the town of Taormina.

You don't want to walk from the train station up to Taormina, it's not far but it's way up on a cliff.  Use the train+bus option by specifying Taormina Central as your destination on Trenitalia.

I am just doing a mock booking, that makes perfect sense. The bus is just outside of the train station, I suspect?

Just seen the cable car they have as well, has anyone done that at all?

Yes, but it's not near the train station.

It's near the town though. 

 

Was thinking of getting the train and bus, do the theatre, have a walk around and then cable car return journey. Back to bus then train
