To answer the OP's question, "Is Hawaii so expensive that a cruise is a good option?"... short answer is yes. A cruise is a cost effective way to get a peak at each island.

I winter in Maui for 4 months. I could take a 180 day world cruise for about the same cost as my condo rental here (and I get a substantial seasonal resident discount). Also note, Kauai and Maui are significantly more expensive than Oahu or the BI. We actually visited the Big Island for a few weeks in January as a cost cutting measure (it's about 40% less than Maui). IMO; There's good reason Kauai and Maui are more expensive, but your mileage may vary.

Of course, like all cruise destinations, your time on land is very limited and immersing yourself in the culture is going to be impossible. But, if you want a snapshot of the islands, cruising is cost effective.
