On board credit - single passenger

I get that the cabins are priced for two people (except single cabins of course) and that as a single traveller I would pay the price for two occupiers. I'm fine with this.

But I don't get why I don't get twice the pre-paid onboard credit? After all, I have actually paid for it.

  • PurpleMoonlight changed the title to On board credit - single passenger

I thought about that when I travelled solo with friends, but not being in P/QG, I didn't pay double occupancy, 'just' 175%.* or it might have been 150%, can't remember as it was so long ago.

I suppose the fact Cunard weren't getting the onboard revenue from two passengers might be factored into their thinking.

Either way, it wasn't a huge deal, just a teeny bit grating, but nowhere near annoying to put me off booking as a solo. 🙂

Hello,

None of my current bookings have any OBC so I have 'no skin in the game'.

But all my bookings with RCI have had double OBC as a singleton until I reached a 'break-point' where I paid only a 50% single supplement whereupon my OBC was 75% of a couple's.

Regards,

Solo guests in Britannia Category don't pay the price for two, they pay 175% , however in Grills a solo guest will pay 200%. ( the full price for two)

I fully agree with you re the amount of OBC offered to solo guests .  I have written to Cunard on numerous  occasions re the amount of OBC I  receive when travelling in the Grills ( ie only one amount) I have even suggested in all fairness that it should be pro rata .

Before anyone replies with that old chestnut , "couples support the Bar Revenue", that is not always correct, often my onboard account is almost the same as the price I've paid for the cruise. 😉

Your data point noted, however I expect Cunard have done their maths, and looked at average daily onboard spend for single occupancy vs 2 or more in a cabin.  If they take into account all onboard spending: bar, drinks packages, internet, shopping, casino, speciality dining, laundry, excursions etc a couple or a family in a stateroom will on average be spending significantly more than a single traveller, hence maybe their reluctance to double up on the OBC.

I am considering Britannia category.

The price is exactly the same be it single or two in the cabin.

Where are you resident ?  Who are you booking with - On line or via a TA ?

I've been sailing Cunard for years as a solo guest and  always paid just under the full price for two (approx 175%)

Britannia  category,   one pays a 'single supplement'

I've two more Britannia  category voyages before the end of this year and have only paid the additional single supplement .

UK, on Cunard website.

Are you booking a single or double cabin?

QM2 doesn't appear to have single balcony cabins. The price for the double cabin is the same whether I input one or two passengers, only only the on board credit changes.

You need to contact and speak with the Cunard UK  call centre, ( Carnival House Southampton)   I believe there is an error or, you are doing something wrong .

I can confirm ALL solo guests pay the 'single supplement' of approx  175% for a double stateroom.

The price quoted for the 'New' single staterooms  are complety different from the double staterooms

Hello,

It's too early on a Sunday morning to delve through all my Cunard paperwork to establish all of what they do on singles' pricing, but here are some facts from RCI, X and the real world where I used to be a shipping agent.

RCI & X charge a solo passenger one person's Port Fees & Taxes and one persons 'Service Charge'/'Hotel Charge'/'Gratuities' - for the avoidance of doubt, these will be half a couple's.

The port authority will charge a shipping company £X pp on a ship's manifest regardless of whether they are in a single/double/treble cabin. So a shipping company charging a solo the couple's price for a cabin is pocketing half the PF&T for itself.

Regards,

Cublet

PS: This is why, if there is any justice, the PF&T for a missed port of call should be refunded as the ship will not be paying them.

Just came back to looking at this.

Queen Victoria, 1st Oct 2023, 19 nights. Britannia balcony. Cunard fair.

1 passenger £9531 cabin 4006

2 passengers £9498 cabin 4005

It's so frustrating.

I'm seeing the same.. wow! I wonder how many times I may have, without notice, paid £50-100 more going solo..

Cunard don’t charge the full price for the solo supplement,  it’s 175% hence why you only get one onboard credit allowance. There are occasional no surcharge deals to be had.

Have you checked the cabins are the definitely same grade ? They may be different so the single is a better cabin because of its position so costs more. Another option is book second guest who becomes a no show on the day. I have heard of people doing that.
