Cruise insurance for UK residents

Recommended Posts

Have been researching many different insurance companies understand pre existing medical being excluded .. however cancelation , curtailment seems low compared to the cost of the cruise, maybe I am overthinking. Thoughts on who is best especially for over 60 and over 70 years young. Traveling July 2024 Oslo to Southampton.

Do we need travel insurance and cruise insurance .. usually purchase through TA however they don't do insurance cruise line is Oceania flights /hotel we might get independent of Oceania.

Feedback greatly appreciated.

Just to play around, I placed this question into ChatGPT

"Can you recommend good travel insurance companies for UK residents in their 60's and 70's?

ChatGPT response was

"Certainly! While I can provide general recommendations, it's important to note that insurance offerings may vary, and it's always advisable to research and compare policies to find the best fit for your specific needs. Here are a few reputable travel insurance companies that cater to UK residents in their 60s and 70s:

  1. Staysure (https://www.staysure.co.uk)
  2. Saga (https://www.saga.co.uk/insurance/travel-insurance)
  3. Avanti (https://www.avantitravelinsurance.co.uk)
  4. AllClear (https://www.allcleartravel.co.uk)
  5. Post Office (https://www.postoffice.co.uk/travel-insurance)

These companies specialize in providing travel insurance for older travelers and often offer comprehensive coverage options, including medical expenses, trip cancellation, lost baggage, and emergency assistance. However, it's advisable to review the policy terms and conditions, coverage limits, and any exclusions to ensure they meet your specific requirements.

Before making a decision, consider factors such as the duration of your trip, the destinations you plan to visit, pre-existing medical conditions, and the level of coverage you desire. It's also recommended to obtain quotes from multiple providers to compare prices and coverage options.

Remember to read customer reviews, seek recommendations from friends or family, and consult with the insurance company directly to address any questions or concerns you may have."

This was terrific! 😁

However, my first thought was:  Do any of these organizations actually exist?

[The post above from Cruisingagain2022 indicates that at least some do!]

ChatGPT has that quirky (!?) tendency to hallucinate and just make things up.

On another forum, several members have been asking it to "give sources", and the following is a real example of the type of reply that ChatGPT gave about "sources" that appears after an elaborate response about a person/location:

"User: Please cite your sources for the above.

GPT-4 wrote: I apologize for the confusion, but as an AI language model, I don't have direct access to sources or the ability to browse the internet. The information provided in the capsule biography of <name> of <location>, was generated based on general knowledge and fictional elements inspired by various literary works. It does not refer to any specific factual sources."

"It does not refer to any specific factual sources.😡
Ouch!
(And every time, each biography - some real people, some from major novels - had some accurate information, and some totally... "not accurate" information!)

My personal opinion on AI and ChatGPT.

AI is in its infancy. Asking AI to cite it's sources would be like asking a 5 yo why it likes cherry Kool-Aid.

AI is nothing but a tool right now. Still mysterious, yet functional. When I was still working in the medical field, AI was starting to be used. Not as a final diagnosis, but as a roadmap to clearly define a path that could otherwise be missed.

If you're not using AI or dismissing it's potential, then you're going to be very late when the AI train pulls out of the station.

hi guys a quick question - If booking a cruise due to depart in 2025 today how do you manage about travel/cruise insurance because if,  a) I took out annual insurance it only covers me until June 2024 b) it seems that it is too far out to book cruise insurance for 2025?

any advise would be welcomed

We don't use annual travel insurance policies (too many restrictions, low limits).

We get a policy for each trip, and those can be purchased at the time the first payment is made, regardless of date of trip.  Indeed, starting the coverage by insuring the deposit offers the best choice of types of coverages in most cases.  Then one can up the coverage each time additional payments are made.

Usually one has 10-20 days for that window for all coverage options (state dependent); one must be fit to travel on the day the insurance is started.
