Rmott Posted June 9, 2023 #1 Share Posted June 9, 2023 Husavik is considered the whale-watching capital of Iceland. Is it worth renting a car at Akureyi (the closest port) and driving to Husavik for a whale tour or should we expect the experience to be just as good embarking from a port city? Thanks so much for any advice!
Nitemare Posted June 9, 2023 #2 Share Posted June 9, 2023 The boats go to the same area to see the whales, I think it is a shorter cruise from Husavik than from Akureyri.
hallasm Posted June 10, 2023 #3 Share Posted June 10, 2023 There is no reason to rent a car and drive to Husavik. The whale watching experience is the same from Akureyri.
Rmott Posted July 11, 2023 Author #4 Share Posted July 11, 2023 Thank you so much for the responses. I did find this on a website (guidetoiceland.is): "The difference between whale watching in Akureyri and Husavik is slight but exists. Skjalfandi [Husavik] has a higher number of cetaceans than Eyjafjordur [Akureyri]. Having a higher number of animals means more chances of sightings and watching exciting behaviors such as breaching, fluking, tail-slapping, and spy-hopping.....Meanwhile, Akureyri is simply a more convenient place to go whale spotting. " Too slight a difference to be concerned with?
