Boardwalkfun Posted July 7, 2023 #1 Share Posted July 7, 2023 We will be getting off a cruise in Civitevechia on September 1, 2024 and have to be at a wedding in Umbria (actually Todi, outside of Perugia) on Sept 6. We have been to Rome so are looking for something different. We have a number of choices. Milan, with a day trip to the lakes; Florence; the lakes. Any thoughts where you would go for 5 days is appreciated. We will not have a car.
Rare cruisemom42 Posted July 7, 2023 #2 Share Posted July 7, 2023 If you're going to Umbria, why not stay in that area and see more of it? View for view, Umbria's just as pretty as Tuscany; maybe prettier with its hill towns, sloping vineyards, etc. Assisi is worth spending a couple of days in and could be a base for day trips to places like Spello or Deruta (a well known center for pottery). There are lots of taxi and van drivers in Assisi who would be happy to make arrangements with you for these kinds of trips. Lake Maggiore is also a very pretty area.
Rare Hlitner Posted July 8, 2023 #3 Share Posted July 8, 2023 Now you are talking my language :). Up front we will confess to not being fans of Milan (I would be happy to never return to that city). But in the interests of full disclosure, DD regularly goes to Milan on business, gets wined and dined by some of the local fashion companies, and likes Milan. Agree with Cruisemom on both Lake Maggiore (Stresa is a good base) and Assisi. We would suggest listening to Cruisemom about how to deal with NOT having a car as we always have a rental or leased car when exploring outside the major cities. We are still working on it. Appreciate all your suggestions.
