Nowhere does it say 10% off.  It just says  "save 10%".  

I think I will write Carnival and ask them to increase the on-board Cheers purchase price by $1 to $65.95 as it's "save 10%" is upsetting to many Cruise Critic members, given the 9.5 cents differential...  🤣

It says you'll save 10%.  When you factor in the gratuity, it is in fact a 10% difference, minus the 9.5 cents.  You forgot to add in the gratuity on top of the $5.00.

Onboard cheers with gratuity:

$76.641 ($64.95 x 1.18)

 

10% savings  should be

= $76.641-$7.6641 = $68.9769

 

...but they charge you $70.471 ($59.95 x 1.18)

 

That isn't 10%. It's the exact same 7.7%

 

You save $5.90 on $76.641.

 

With gratuity it goes from being $1.495 less than a 10% discount to $1.7641 less.

The bottom line is that it's cheaper to buy Cheers about 90% of the time compared to the drink package on RCI.  Because of their Dynamic Pricing policy, the price fluctuates depending upon which ship you're cruising on and the time of year.  Unless you're on one of their rust buckets off season, Cheers will always be cheaper, many times substantially less.  On some sailings, Cheers is 20 bucks a day cheaper.

Not saying your wrong but RCL's has a higher limit on drink cost so you can get a lot more top shelf items, they have no limit on number of alcoholic drinks (cheers 15 per day).

No, Carnival has a limit of 20.00 per drink.  RCI has a limit of 13.00 per drink.  Yes, RCI has no limit on the number of drinks that you consume each day, but if you need at least 16 drinks per day to enjoy your cruise.....  This should only come into play if you're a serious beer drinker and you're young enough to have the metabolism to process all of that beer.

Go to the Alchemy Bar and enjoy your 15 max drinks.  It's tough to hit it once in a while, let alone every day.

Not sure why you keep insisting that you take 10% off the fully priced onboard purchase.  The promotion is not "10% off" the onboard purchase price.  The promotion is "save 10%".  That implies there is a 10% difference between the fully priced onboard purchase and the fully priced pre-board purchase, which is directionally true, except for a 9.5 cents discrepancy.

The onboard price being 10% more doesn't mean you save 10% by pre-buying.

Please educate me as to what a $500.00 OBC promotion is.  I will infer it's a casino deal, since we are Platinum with 25 Carnival cruises and have never received such an offer.  But then again never received a RU1, RU2 or RU3 Cheers promotion either.

My assumption is that it's probably 10% off the package price, but that the gratuities are charged on the full price rather than the discounted price. Would that explain the difference?

 

This would be similar to walking into a restaurant with some kind of coupon... others may do things differently, but my husband and I would tip on the price that our meals would be without the discount.

The Carnival Cheers package is a good deal. Specialty coffees, energy drinks, and decent wine. Buy or don’t buy, it’s the best deal you’re going to get on any of the cruise lines.

I’m in the camp that it’s not a 10% savings.  You can’t take the $5.90 savings and divide by the $59 cost.  You’d have to use the $64. 
 

But if you use AARP gift cards then you can save more than 10%, approximately 18%.

Really????   You just got off of the Sky Princess and depending how far back you made your reservation, you would have been able to purchase the Plus package for 40. 50 or 60 pp per day.  Even at 60 a day, that's substantially cheaper than Carnival.  That 60 includes drinks package, drinks package tips, wifi and general gratuities.  On Carnival that is over 100 pppd.

Every once in a while there will be $500 OBC given when you book, the ones I've seen are  when you book very early. I have a Celebration cruise for this Nov, when I booked it last June they gave us $500 OBC
