Fouremco Posted July 29, 2023 #1 Share Posted July 29, 2023 According to this blog item, Kaanapali Beach has effectively disappeared. https://www.hawaii-guide.com/blog/erosion-at-kaanapali-beach
CaribbeanBound Posted July 29, 2023 #2 Share Posted July 29, 2023 (edited) It's overstated. We were there in late January. Erosion? yes. Gone? No way! Edited July 29, 2023 by CaribbeanBound
Rare BermudaBound2014 Posted July 29, 2023 #3 Share Posted July 29, 2023 This article is not dated. It is clearly old. There is seasonal erosion at Kaanapali Beach, but the sand returns in the winter months. Last September there was temporary issues with the Kaanapali boardwalk, but all the sand returned and the boardwalk was busy as usual. Currently there are no significant erosion problems on Kaanapali that I can identify. As you can see from this live webcam, the beach is there. It's double that size in the winter months. Sorry the shot is dark, but it's 7 a.m. in Maui right now. I'll include the webcam link so you can click and see first hand after the sun rises.. Rare BermudaBound2014 Posted July 29, 2023 #4 Share Posted July 29, 2023 Updated to show the beach during the daytime. Plenty of beach, especially for this time of year. Expect it to be double that size during the winter.
Fouremco Posted July 29, 2023 Author #5 Share Posted July 29, 2023 Good to hear. As you say, the article is dated, probably based on last September's event. This video gives a good idea of the conditions at that time. https://www.hawaiinewsnow.com/video/2022/09/25/watch-dramatic-drone-footage-erosion-kaanapali-beach-raises-call-action/
Rare BermudaBound2014 Posted July 29, 2023 #6 Share Posted July 29, 2023 I remember that video from last September. I was concerned because I walk that Kaanapali boardwalk often. But worried for no reason. I took this video in January 2023. The red arrow is where the web cam is located. You can see that by January the beach was reclaimed and twice the size as it is now. That is not to say that there isn't erosion concerns on the West Side of Maui, but the article you posted is grossly misleading. The erosion is temporary. 1
