BuckeyeMark Posted August 8, 2023 #1 Share Posted August 8, 2023 We will be in Flam from 8:00AM to 4:00PM next May. Should we go immediately from the ship and do the railroad and save other sites like Stegastein for later in the day or do those first and ride the railroad after lunch? Any reason to prefer one over the other?
hallasm Posted August 8, 2023 #2 Share Posted August 8, 2023 In my opinion, no difference - check when there are available tickets for the train

We're a little far out still. Do you recommend we book this ourselves or do it as an excursion through the cruise line? Any reason not to book it ourselves? Any reason not to book it ourselves? Yes, book yourself - exact same journey - ship tours might include waffles - but very expensive waffles. Book at Norways Best - five to six months in advance.
kitkat343 Posted August 9, 2023 #5 Share Posted August 9, 2023 The train station is extremely close to the ship so this is a perfect independent excursion. Please note in terms of timing that there is no assigned seating on the train, so you need to line up a little early to get good seats (the few people on this forum who reported being unhappy with this train got there late and didn't have a good view out the window). Most seats have good views though. We had plenty of time to do the train in the morning and another excursion in the afternoon. 1

Or buy the tickets at www.vy.no, i.e. from the company that actually operates the train. Edited August 9, 2023 by Apel Spelling

Vy.no is better if you need flexibility or a single ticket. There will still be tickets for sale at vy.no when tickets are sold out at Norways Best. (or as a cruise ship excursion).
