When do you sign up for messaging on the app?

I can see nothing on the app which refers to accessing the messaging function through the NCL app. Does it all happen once onboard? Do you need only the latest version which appears to be incompatible with my phone? Cost is $10?

You sign up on board.  I'm not sure if older versions will still work.
