Hopefully someone with more recent experience will advise soon. We went a couple years prior to covid and used a very reliable bus service. Bought ticket at well signed desk in airport and bus stand just outside airport terminal. Well organised and staff assisted with luggage.

We did this too before covid and were very happy with the service.

The staff even bowed to the bus as it left the airport.

We were just in Japan last April. That bus service is still operational. They make limited stops and service terminates for the day around 6PM. While we had made reservations online before flying to Narita our plane arrived too late to use the service. We ended up booking a cab through booking.com. That worked out very well. We were staying at the Asakusa View hotel, our ride was about 30 minutes.

We have just returned from a Diamond Princess cruise around Japan in July and used the Limousine Bus from Narita to Yokohama and cannot recommend them highly enough.   The service runs about every hour  to Yokohama station and, depending where you are staying in Yokohama,  they can drop you off at your  hotel ( we stayed at the Intercontinental Grand and got dropped off at the door) but if your hotel is near the cruise terminal it was only about A $10 for a taxi from the terminal  to Yokohama Station  (when we left the ship. ) You can purchase tickets,  about  A$35  each, at Narita Terminal   ( all three terminals ) when you arrive and the pick up point is just outside the door from where you buy your ticket. There is a timetable on line but as I said, they run pretty much every hour. The trip is around an hour and a half  and like most things in Japan was clean, spot on time and effortless.

Thanks.

Any tips you have regarding tours ( private, diy, ship ) and the dinner arrangements in the MDR please ?

We just booked dining day to day in the MDRs and just had a table for two ( we don't speak  Japanese😁)  As seems to be the case with a lot of cruise lines, post covid, meals were just average and the service was hit and miss. Some restaurants were better than others, the International dining room was probably the best,  Sabatini’s was extremely disappointing, service and food wise ( glad we got a freebie for it …certainly not worth paying extra for) even ordered a limoncello ( it is an Italian restaurant after all ) and was told they did not have any. We did a few ship excursions and, as always, were overpriced and nothing special. It is very easy to get around Japan, doing your own thing and we did that a lot.

Thanks. We're doing a short cruise on Diamond at the end of October so I was interested to read your comments. We've booked a table for two evey night in the MDR

Were there Japanese dishes on the MDR menus?

Sorry to hear about Sabatinis, usually it's very good. It certainly was on both Coral and Grand but we did have one less than steller experience there pre-Covid. I can't recall exactly which ship it was though, it may have been Diamond.

We've been to Japan a couple of times but not to most of the ports our cruise will go to  (northern side of Honshu). We've booked short morning excursions in most of the ports and hope to be able to potter around ashore in the afternoon and have lunch ashore.

Not really "Japanese" dishes...just normal meals with a Japanese name (or twist) a lot of the time.

Oh bummer! I was hoping for something a little more authentic based on the blurb in the  Travel Summary. Never mind, we've got a couple of days in Yokohama before the Princess cruise and a couple of days in Tokyo before the Regent cruise. Now if only I could remember where the really good restaurants were that we discovered in 2018 - assuming they're still there, of course.

You reminded me of the time we were in Tokyo with a group of Aussie highschool kids. My wife (a teacher) and I had a free day and we wanted to visit the Honda MotoGP race track and Collection Hall (museum) at Motegi.

Getting there was a little daunting. It  involved a short walk from hotel to the local station catch a suburban train to the Tokyo Shinkansen station.

Shinkansen train to Utsunomya.

Bus from Utsunomiya to Nanai station.

From there took a ride in a bus, fitted with train wheels on narrow guage track, to Motegi station. This was a delightful ride through the countryside past farms and paddyfields.

Then a taxi from Motegi station to the race track.

Not speaking Japanese was not a problem. Everyone we met along the way were very keen to help. Lots of "signing", pointing at maps etc.. So long as we could pronounce place names all was good.

There was a dedicated bus that daily ran direct from Utsunomya to the track once in the morning then back in the afternoon. We arrived too late to catch it in the morning but we did catch it back in the afternoon.
