Italian Ports

I've been reading the reviews (most of which, as recently as Spring 2023, are poor)  which mention that passengers are only allowed off ship while on an NCL excursion. I am hoping this was just during Covid?

I know of no ports that dock cruise ships and does not allow passengers off.

There may have been some during COVID but I think most cruises during COVID were cancelled anyway.

My daughter cruised Italy about a month ago and there were no such restrictions at all. Probably a covid thing.

Back in 2021 I was booked on a cruise on NCL Escape, where we were informed that only NCL excursions were allowed if we wanted to disembark in Italy. Because of this restriction, we cancelled this cruise and did the Jade to Greece instead, which had no such restrictions.

I think if you are going to read reviews, you should stick to ones that are more recent and have current information. So many things changed from 2021-2022 to now in cruising that you will get information that is no longer pertinent.

When cruising started up again post Covid, some ports did restrict people getting off to ship's tours only. I believe those restrictions are now gone.

You are correct, so many changes due to Covid that only post Covid reviews are relevant  for most points

Those restrictions are certainly now gone. Have been for ages.

yeah, I wont bother with old reviews. Anything could change
